Well, he was still under contract for this season. This contract just bumps up his pay a little bit and ensures he will stay in Jacksonville until he retires (which he pretty much said he'd do once this new contract runs out).
What will become of Greg Jones? This year, he'll likely return to his role of fullback/short yardage back. You'll see him get more and more action in the backfield as Taylor gets phased out as he becomes older. MJD also needs a bigger back to compliment him and share to role. Keep in mind, too, that he's recovering from an ACL tear, and it took him about three years to recover from the one he suffered at FSU (although this tear is nowhere near as bad).
Having a lot of good, quality backs on the roster is a good problem to have. Both Jones' and Jones-Drew's deals are extremely cheap right now, too, and neither will have to be extended until Fred is gone. Plus, there's the fact that Del Rio is absolutely in love with all three of these guys.
Jaguars | Team signs Taylor to extension
Thu, 1 Mar 2007 12:52:48 -0800
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars have signed RB Fred Taylor to a three-year contract extension. Taylor was under contract for the 2007 season, so the deal essentially creates a four-year contract worth $23 million. Taylor's base salary was reduced from $2.55 million to $800,000 for the 2007 season. However, a $4.2 million roster bonus was added for 2007. Taylor will receive a spring roster bonus of $1 million each year from 2008 through 2010. The deal includes base salaries of $4 million (2008), $5 million (2009) and $6 million (2010).
i mean jones is a fullback and i dont think hed b successful @ HB anyway
He had a nice year in 05, but didn't get used nearly enough. In training camp this year, Jones was all the rave. He was more explosive than the team had ever seen him, because he was finally all way recovered from his ACL tear. There was major, major talk of him taking the starting job from Fred Taylor. That's how good he looked.
