  • West Coast teams and early starts on the East Coast

A couple of weeks ago, the NFL owners passed a resolution which keeps East Coast teams from being the visiting team against San Diego & Oakland or Seattle & San Francisco in the same season. So, they way it works is this: teams based in the Eastern Time Zone, who face the NFC West or AFC West during the season, would only have to make the cross country trip once.

However, there was nothing done for those 4 West coast teams to keep them from having to face early East coast starts which start at 10AM PST. This requires West coast teams playing on the East coast to make their wake up calls as early as 5AM and a curfew set at 11PM EST is 8PM PST. For example, this past season, the Niners and the Seahawks had 3 games start at 10AM PST. Oakland had 4 10AM PST starts and San Diego had 3 10AM PST starts. This is in addition to a few games each year that West Coast teams must face in the Central Time Zone.

Goodell has said that there isn't evidence to suggest that such scheduling has an effect on West coast teams, contrary to comments and suggestions made by West coast teams' coaches and players.

So, I ask: do you think it is fair for the NFL to schedule West coast teams this way?

I kind of liked it the way it was before....Adds more to homefield advantage.

When I first saw this I was going to whine about it being unfair to the WC teams.

But you raise a great point.

Isn't the point of homefield advantage to give the home team an advantage? lol.

It is both unfair and also does take away homefield advantage. Really dumb move.

Why don't we just have all 32 teams playing in neutral site stadiums, that way nobody gets homefield advantage? Also, fans will love it because instead of their favorite home team, they'll get to see an ever changing lineup of out of town teams! Hurray!

Way to miss the point, Ward. What I am trying to point out is that they give East coast teams a break in how often they have to travel but if a West coast team has to play in the EST, they dont make it a 4pm EST game, nor do they care how often they have to cross the country.

I thought the rule was the East Coast team doesn't have to travel to the west one week after another, they get like a month break.

I always wondered why they didn't give the West Coast teams traveling East late game. I guess that happens when it 5 vs 17

I think you missed my point... I think special rules protecting anyone from playing anyone are ridiculous. Where do we disagree?

Yeah, the homefield would work both ways. If Miami has to go to Seattle, Seattle has a tremendous homefield advantage. Same the other way around too...traveling that far really is exhausting regardless of the time the games are played.

Why don't teams organise their travel schedule better and players and coaches stop being such pussies and do the job they're paid to.

I WISH I got to travel on a private jet, first class and stay in awesome motels a few times a year for free, while getting paid millions of dollars.

The West Coast owners signed off on it, so it is their own fault.
