The team doesn't want to get rid of him outright because they acknowledge that there isn't a realistic market of interest out there where we can go find his replacement, aside from the draft.
His speed has regressed over the years, probably for the sake of adding on weight to become that "thumper" the team has expected of him since transitioning to the mike position. He's active in the middle and seemingly racks up tackles, always has, sometimes at the expense of placing himself in traffic, which for someone who has issues shedding blockers, isn't the greatest of ideas.
The word out is that Al has held Captain Kirk responsible for the majority of the team's chronic run-stopping troubles, instead of putting the blame where it surely belongs, with the front four.
