    JASON ON THE ELAM
Posted by Mike Florio on March 21, 2008, 5:14 p.m.
Kicker Jason Elam has spent his entire NFL career with the Denver Broncos.

    And heís now heading home.

The guy who went to high school in Snellville, Georgia will play for the Atlanta Falcons, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

And Elam will be well paid to do it. Per Schefter, itís a four-year, $9 million contract, with $3.3 million in guaranteed money.

Itís unknown what if anything the Broncos offered to retain his services. Earlier this week, owner Pat Bowlen said that he was paying attention to the situation, and he presumably wanted to keep Elam around.

sad to see him go, but much rather see him in Atlanta, then in KC =)

Nice. We will finally have someone who can put it in from 40+ now.

they are definitely in break it down to build it up mode (called rebuilding everywhere but Shanaland).

While I agree that it hurts, but the Broncos do need to get a younger kicker who can actually hit a 50+ yard field goal and also kickoff to the goaline.
How many times did we get to the 35ish yard line, only to stop and have to punt/go for it?
I love Elam, think he is one of the best kickers in the game, but the Broncos are rebuilding and they do need to get younger.
Letting him go might cost us a couple games, but it will let a rookie(hopefully) come in and get some experience and become the "next" Elam.

Did you see how much money Myers would've been paid to sit on the sidelines and be a backup?

Elam was great for us, but it's time for somebody who can kickoff and hit the looong field goals.

Well aren't you just a little ray of sunshine...

This is actually addition by subtraction IMO. Elam is getting long in the tooth and wanted too much given his age, unreliability from long range, and inability to handle kickoffs. Speaking of garbage kickers in the draft, Taylor Mehlhaff late 2nd day doesn't sound bad to me. We'll probably sign Mare or some other vet too which is good competition for the job in TC. One kicker who can do it all (kickoffs, FG's, and XP's) would be divine.

                  Geez, mr. Negativity.
Seriously, Elam only had 2 opportunities last year at 50+. And the one he made was exactly 50 yards.
Why do you think he only got 2 chances? Maybe because there wasn't much faith in him to hit that distance? I will say though, that most kickers got very few attempts from 50+.
I don't like losing Elam, but this gives the chance that maybe they can get a new kicker who can kick for 15 years.
The Packers got their kicker for the next decade in Crosby, the Cowboys with Folk, and Chargers with Kaeding, all with drafting them.

i wouldn't be surprised if we end up being one of the worst teams in the league next year.. no kicker, no punter, no safeties, no fullback, weak offensive line, raw defensive line, average linebackers, etc.

                    we suck, straight up.

I'm inclined to agree. I've never felt so negative about the team's prospects coming into a season as I do right now. Brandon Marshall's injury of idiocy was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back...

Our talent level and depth are awful. We've got question marks, scrubs and castoffs slotted in as starters all over the place. If we actually manage to have a good draft (which I'm not counting on), I could easily see a half dozen rookies starting by the end of the season... of course, by then whatever thin playoff hopes exist would be long dead.

THREE DECENT KICKERS IN THE DRAFT!?!?!?!?!?!?! that paul ernster was a helluva draft pick-up also. he couldn't even kick-off right. i'm sure the only reason he didn't have more 50+ opportunities was lack of faith in his leg. that's why they didn't let him attempt any game winners. shanny was also an excellent play caller last season.

*shrug* fine. we disagree. you all think we'll be much better off next year with whatever guy we draft (none of whom this year are on par with crosby, the only rookie who outperformed elam from 50+, the thing most of you are whining about) or with some dude like olindo mare (last season? 1-4 from 50+).
Did I say we would be better off? No. I said its time to get young, and groom a guy with a better leg.
This team isn't winning anything next year, its a rebuilding season. Time to get young and let guys develop for future years.
You are overreacting IMO on this move. Sure, it hurts next season, but if we do get a younger kicker and groom him for the future, we will be set for future years.

Honestly, I think you guys are a bit down on yourselfs. I love the Atlanta Falcons signing of Jason Elam, but when you have a good, young quarterback, a good, young receiver, a good running game, very good cornerbacks, and a defensive line who very well could cause havoc for the quarterback you always have a shot to win games.

I mean, look at the Falcons. We have nothing except some runningbacks.

and nearly every move the franchise has made this offseason has been highly questionable at best in terms of actually getting better at some point within the next 3-5 years.
You can not be as bad as the Falcons. That would be impossible. But you guys sound like Falcons fans over here with the pessimism.

There's a lot to be pessimistic about. Apart from QB, where's the good news? Our star receiver? He's an immature idiot, who seems determined to flush a promising career down the toliet.

Look at the filler we've signed in the offseason - those guys are going to get a chance to start, with no emerging young talent behind them. That's ******* scary. So now this draft becomes the wellspring from which will flow the real talent we need at DT, OT, WR, LB, S, C, K, P ... and we're not talking about late-round fliers of the "wouldn't it be nice" variety, we're talking "become a starter within 2 years" kinds of picks. Yeah, right, I can see that happening.

Throw on top of that a purge of the coaching staff and head office, as well as an owner who has suddenly decided to pinch pennies, and it's hard to get excited about the coming season.
