"DT Ndamukong Suh is receiving first team reps. DT Sammie Hill has been moved to the second team. Suh has gotten penetration on several plays and would have sacked Matthew Stafford twice."
With the arrival of Ndamukong Suh, the depth chart at DT has Suh and Corey Williams starting. The second team will feature Sammie Hill and either Andre Fluellen or Landon Cohen. Neither has impressed, but Fluellen has had better workouts."
Lions WR Dennis Northcutt is having his best practice of camp so far. Northcutt has started slowly this camp, but made a series of nice grabs during red zone drills. Given the play of WR Derrick Williams, Northcutt needs good workouts to contend for the roster.
WR Derrick Williams continues to play his way into consideration for a roster spot. His speed has improved, and he has represented well in team drills. Versatility on special teams makes him a strong candidate for fourth WR.
After a solid start to camp, the LB corps has been picked apart by Matthew Stafford. After a series of sloppy play, LB Zack Follett drew the ire of defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham.
RB Aaron Brown has gotten increased second-team snaps. Brown has been featured in KR drills as well. It looks as if the Lions value his speed despite his tendency for mental lapses.
Lions CB Chris Houston seems to have solidified himself at the number 1 CB spot. He's the preferred practice partner of Calvin Johnson and one of the few secondary players that has challenged the star receiver.
WR Nate Burleson continues to have strong workouts. His work with younger receivers has paid dividends, and his consistency has allowed coach Jim Schwartz to use him as a measuring stick in CB battles. Burleson looks rejuvenated.
Coach Jim Schwartz on TE Brandon Pettigrew: "He's had a good rehab. We don't want to set him back by trying to do too much too soon. It's good to see him out there. He's a big target. If you put it in the zip code, he'll catch it."
Coach Jim Schwartz on DT Sammie Hill: "He's taking the biggest step I've seen him take in his short career. He's manned up for us, and that was good for us. I think he's going to be a good player in this league."
Thursday, August 05, 201010:42 amLive punt drills are taking place for the first time this camp. WRs Tim Toone,Nate Burleson, Dennis Northcutt, and Derrick Williams handled PR duties. RB Jahvid Best did not participate in special teams drills
.10:38 amThe presence of officials has cleaned up the mistakes along the lines. After a week of abundant encroachment and false starts, there has been just one penalty called today on a lineman.
10:35 amDE Jared DeVries and DT Andre Fluellen have had a good series of team drills. They caught RBs Kevin Smith and Jahvid Best for losses, and created pressure on QB Shaun Hill. Fluellen needs more of these performances to solidify the final DT spot.
10:19 amThe offense has dominated the first period of 7-on-7 drills this morning. LBs and CBs are very late breaking on the ball and are biting on too many fakes. They have been unable to stop speed routes.
10:10 amA crew of three NFL officials, SJ Don Carlsen, HL Mark Baltz and BJ Dino Paganelli will officiate drills. The crew will clarify for the team this season's "points of emphasis" in NFL rules.
10:03 amWR Nate Burleson has shown excellent deep speed this morning. After being used primarily on short and mid-range routes, Burleson outran corners in fly pattern during a one-on-one drill.
9:57 amDT Ndamukong Suh looks to be making up for his missed practice time well. Suh's conditioning is not an issue this morning. His first true test will come in full pad contact drills.
9:23 amTE Brandon Pettigrew (knee), CB Amari Spievey (ankle) LB DeAndre Levy (back), S Ko Simpson (knee), CB Jack Williams (knee), S Louis Delmas (groin), and WR Mike Moore (shoulder) will not practice today.
Really stinks Levy,Delmas and Spievey are missing time. Hopefully they get healthy soon and Delmas isn't serious. Groin injuries are tough to come back from quickly.
I was at practice today as a media member. Got to hear Schwartz talk after practice.
Nothing very illuminating came from the interview, only that Jahvid Best can probably be expected to throw a few passes this season.
He downplayed the Delmas injury, which has been creating a buzz. We might use a kickoff specialist this year. Amari Spievey didn't practice due to a hip injury. DeVries and Felton left practice with minor injuries.
Kevin Smith looked to be healed up pretty good. Suh wasn't very involved in the practice (or so it seemed).
Old Mrs. Ford and the grandkids were there watching practice and being driven around in a customized Lions golf cart. Everyone was on high alert with their presence. Stafford had an awkward "Hi, how are you" greeting with Mrs. Ford before retreating to the locker room.
Tom Lewand and Martin Mayhew disappeared after the first 45 minutes of practice.
And the Schwartz conducted his interview at a barely audible level. Seriously didn't expect him to be so damn quiet.
