  • True. but it will still be a dificult matchup when we face them, as it would for any other team. The rest of the Mets lineup doesn't scare me, even a healthy Pedro, the Phils tore the Mets up for the most part last year.

    • The Phils, Mets, and Braves will be in a dogfight much of the year. It will come down to injuries, consistency from the starting pitching, bullpen play, and clutch hitting.

I agree with that 100%. on another note, Lidge is out for 6 weeks and Gordon will be the closer for the start of the season. Are the Phils going to have another opportunity for a slow start, or will Gordon be able to keep things together for a few weeks in April?

        • Lidge is out 3-6. Probably 6, but you never know.

          • What do you think about the closer situation?

            • I am not happy at all with Gordon as the closer, but he will be enough to get by until Lidge is ready. Obviously, this is not at all ideal, but I'm glad that the follow-up surgery came now rather than August.

              • How do you think the Phils will start the season? There are somewhere around 14-18 games in those first three or for weeks Lidge will miss. How will the Phils record be, and how many of the potential losses will be contributed to a blown lead?

                • The Phillies need to start no worse than .500 in April. They are not going to make a miraculous comeback in the last weeks of the season. No freakin' way. Not with the Braves retooled and the Mets still dangerous. They need to start strong to give themselves a cushion for their May losing streak, setting them up to finish strong.

                  • That is very true, or the Phils will have a minute chance of reaching the playoffs.

                    • They can't afford any slip-ups. Their own division is stronger than last season, and the DBacks and Brewers are a year older with their young guys. I also expect the Cubs to rebound and for the Padres and Rockies to be there. It will be a dogfight.

                      • The whole NL will be tightly contested this year, just like it is every year, but this will most likely be the most exciting year in a while.

Great article on the subpar Phillies ownership and how they should sell.

                          • Interesting, it is something that I was not aware of, at least to this extent.

                            • Davey Lopes, the Phils first base coach, was dignosed with prostate cancer. Says he will be out for 6 weeks, so it doesn't seem serious, and hopefully it isn't. But you never know when you are dealing with cancer, so I want to say I wish him the best and a painless and quick recovery. He is a true character guy and is a great member of the coaching staff, but that is not important until he is healthy, so good luck to him, and my best wishes.

                              • I wish him all the best. Hope that he can overcome this setback and return to the game.
