  • About Avatar.. I don't think it looks that bad or anything, but I think it'll be this decade's Waterworld. The budget for it is pretty huge and they're gonna need to spend more on advertising and all that. It will need to do insane numbers just to break even.

I think It'll have difficulty making big money because it's cartoony (see: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within), there's no star power, it's not part of a franchise, and the movie is supposedly 2 1/2 hours long.

So yeah, like I said.. I don't think it looks bad, I'd give it a chance. I just don't think it's got much going for it as far as what the casual movie goer wants to see.

Sounds more than a little bit like another of Cameron's films, Titanic. I'll admit I know little about Avatar but you did just describe Titanic 12 years ago...

Cameron in himself has become a pull and while I personally don't think his movies are great, he certainly has a lot of vocal fans who will do a lot of his PR work for him.

Props to BK on the sig!

I resent that..Waterworld was a good movie, totally believable. I totally related when he threw the tarp over that girl and beat her with a paddle. NO.

        • The only problem I have with the Avatar trailer is that I don't see what's so new and innovative about it. I mean I do think it looks better then Beowolf and some of the more recent CGI heavy movies, but it looks more like an improvement then an innovation. But this all based on a small sample size, purely on what I saw on the trailer.

            • Speaking of favorite scenes, the Joker's pencil trick is another personal favorite of mine. That whole speech of his is genius.

"You think you can just steal from us and walk away?"
              "Yeah..."

                • memorable scenes

The 1st 12 mins. of Saving Pvt. Ryan.

The bowling alley parking lot battle of Goodman, Buscemi, & The Dude vs the Nihilists in Big Lebowski. Also every scene in Lebowski where his ride degenerates with each new desecration or battering.

Butch Cassady & Sundance laugh at his joke about how the "fall will kill ya" before jumping off the cliff

                  5. Magnolia - The scene where Tom Cruise talks to his dieing father. That scene alone makes me love Tom Cruise, no matter how bat **** crazy he is.
Or Cruise in the same film being outed by a reporter about his college degrees & background as a motivational speaker guru, the expressions of twisted disbelief on his face as the mask drops. btw many think that the con man Cruise played in Magnolia is very close to the real batshit Scientologist Tom Cruise.

Rutger Hauer's dying scene in Bladerunner.

The 1st long chase scene (in Africa), Casino Royale remake.

The slo-mo massacre scene in The Wild Bunch.

Brando/Don Vito Corleone slapping around 2 different people in < 10 mins. in his office with "Whazzamatta with you?!?"

Every scene in Children of Men where Clive own's footwear becomes more primitive as he downgrades in his flt. from civilization into chaos.

The ending of Hombre when Paul Newman aims the shotgun at Richard Boone, Boone says "Well now, I wonder what hell looks like"

                  Scene 1 of Inglourious Basterds

Fight scene in LA Confidential where Crowe/Bud White unloads on Guy Pearce.

The faceoff scene by the lake in Roadhousewhere the karate killer tells Swayze "I used to **** guys like you in prison." (always filtered out with basic cable)

The scene close to the end of Usual Suspects in Chazz Palmenteri's office, he realizes he's been fed an elaborate tale of BS as he connects the dots from his bulletin board, desk item labels, etc by Kevin Spacey, followed by the scene of Spacey losing his limp on the sidewalk.

Original Alien, maximum trauma scene when the baby alien pops out of John Hurt's chest.

Any scene with Bruce Willis taunting the Eurotrash gang in the highrise on the radio in Die Hard

The beginning of Gladiator when Maximus orders the legions to "unleash hell."

Jurassic Park 1, 1st t-rex scene with the reptilian eye pupil contraction in the flashlight, chasing the jeep, etc.

The confrontation scene in Tombstone, the "I'm a dead man" expression on Biehn's face as Johnny Ringo realizes he's facing Doc Holliday instead of Earp when Kilmer says "I'm here, Huckleberry...."

Not really, Titanic was based on a significant historical moment. Avatar is not.

It means James Cameron is from the future.

The scene in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? when they pick up Robert Johnson hitchhiking after selling his soul to the Devil, & when they ask him what Satan looks like, he says "Oh no, the Devil, he white like you..."
