Whatever dude. That was hilarious when he tried to kick out the window of the cop car and got his foot stuck.

What was new and innovative? Storyline?

I guess i was expecting something more than what it was....DDL selling oil to a city....the city thriving....something happening to cause a changed life experience...changing you for the worst...then turning into a drunk when your older...don't get it...not to mention the kid church pastor...I guess I just didn't like the overall plot....

Add in the fact that the movie was over 2 hours long....i found myself bored looking...and expecting more.

Ok you missed something then because the town of Little Boston did not thrive. DDL never gave them their rightful money. At the end ELi reminds him of this and says "I want the 5000 dollars that was rightfully owed to us with interest" his speech to the town in the beginning was a mirage. He did not care about the welfare of the town and its citizens, but about his oil business and himself. The cinematography was outstanding in my opinion. It set a really ominous mood. The acting was the best I had ever seen. period. in any movie. It was a different type of movie. Not your normal- "man redeems himself" sort of movie- you are supposed to hate the main character at the end.,

          • I though There Will Be Blood showcased all of the best cinema has to offer. Not only was there brilliant acting, directing, cinematography and score but I thought the script was brilliant. If it were up to me it would have swept the academy awards. As a character study I cannot think of a better movie. My mouth was agap the whole time and very rarely can a movie make me feel as many emotions as this did. I know people who did not get the movie (my girlfriend who I say it with thought it was just okay) and I find that very hard to understand. All I have to say is you should watch it again. Not to sound pretentious but all of my film school friends have loved it and called it the best of the year so maybe not liking the movie comes from not really being open to great cinema.

To close Thule, you are dead to me. I would also like to hear some of your favoite movies from last year so I can maybe understand were you are coming from. Be warned, if you say Transformers I will punch a hole through a wall.

              • Damnit I just went through the archives and had a list and clicked back :S

                Just from short term memory
                Zodiac
                We are Marshall
                HPootp
                superbad
                knocked up
                chuck and larry
Bourne was a great series for me
Children of Men was a decent story weak ending tho

Not a huge comedy fan...but could appriciate those..

Wasn't a huge fan of some movies
Simpson movie was weak for me
                1408 really didn't like
number 23 was ok from jim carrey...but didn't like it
twbb....admittingly fell asleep through about 20 mins in the middle...but was really expecting something spectacular

also some movies that i never got around to seeing
sweeney tood was one i wanted to get too and haven't done yet....

I don't claim to be a movie buff...and I love movies that get me thinking...but just some movies that got tons of hype that i didn't understand.

As far as favorite actors and movies all time go
                Jamie Foxx
                Denzel
                Leo

I could watch their movies all day...favorite all time probably is Man on Fire....liked City of God...but outside of that never really got into the foreign genre. Older movies are ok...but really have a hard time staying into stuff i can't relate too...maybe thats the problem for some movies. But then again I'm a huge fan of Shawshank.

Just going through imdb top 250...

really wasn't sold by godfather...although understand it's following.

Huge series fan...form matrix/xmen/hp/lotr/star wars all are great for me
pulp fiction was a good flick
gangs of new york i was a fan of.
war movies don't move me at all...saving private ryan/Schindler's List /pianist...all will never find myself watching again.

voiced on twbb....just wasn't my flick
momento was something diferent and i liked it
Hannabal movies are fine...books were much better
                seven is a classic
No Country was decent....once again fell asleep...but appriciated it
                liked american beauty...not sure why
sucker for anything with brittany murphy in it...
                the departed was good....
                blood diamond was also nice
american history x was graphic i love that ****
to kill a mockingbird was a great storyline...would reread the book before watching the movie
eternal sunshine really disappointed me...too lovely for me
a clockwork orange...just came off as a huge stoner movie for me to like
Requiem for a Dream struck a nerve...a top 10 movie for me
                Hotel Rwanda was great
                Sin City is another favorite
                The Prestige was good
rainman was terrible for me...but understood why some people liked it
donnie darko was mediocre...was a huge fan but would watch it again
                V for Vendetta is a top 5
                Fan of Juno
Enjoyed Crash and Haven...wasn't a fan of babel at all
blow was a personal favorite along with training day
have a soft spot for fast and the furious even if the acting is terrible
not many football movies I don't like
                big fan of shooter

                  • Well then we are almost the exact opposite when it comes to movies.

A Clockwork Orange is one of my all time favorites. Another brilliant character study, genious score, and a glorious performance by Malcom McDowell.

                    The Godfather is perfect.

I hated the LOTR's movies though I do understand the technical acheivement. The books are far better and I thought The Hobbit was amuch better book then the LOTR's books.

                    I hated Matrix 2 and 3.

I think the Harry Potter movies are some of the worst movies ever made, though I slightly enjoyed the last one. I think it is because Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman are awesome. I did really enjoy all of the books, just thought the movies were crap.

I wanted to poke out my eyes and stab a pen in my ears throught The Fast and The Furious and the even shittier 2 Fast 2 Furious.

V for Vendetta was good but utterly forgetable.

I am a huge Donnie Darko fan.

I thought Children of Men was one of, if not the best, movie of 2006.

Some of the movies you liked (Chuck and Larry, We Are Marshall, and Shooter) I won't see for fear that I will vomit everywhere as a result of their shittyness.

Then again we do agree on a few things. I love Blow, Memento, Sin City, Requiem for a Dream, City of God, Seven, and Zodiac. I am alos a big Apatow fan, especially from his TV days (Undeclared is a brilliant show) so I did love Knocked Up and Superbad.

To each his own I guess.

Oh and **** Jamie Foxx. His Oscar speech was one of the most arrogant things I have ever heard and he deserves a slap in the face.

So to sound like a prick before and ask for your favorite movies of last year, I do it to everyone and it pisses people off. I also have the tendency to ramble when it comes to movies.

To comment on what you said with my opinion
A Clockwork Orange is an incredible film- way before its time.
LOTR Series are some of my favorite movies of all time
Godfather is perfect as you so elegantly stated
DOnnie DArko was disappointing to me, just not for me
Matrix 2 and 3 i thought were ok but no where near #1
                        UNDECLARED- great show
Seven, Memento and City of God are 3 of my 25 fav movies of all time
                        I loved V for Vendetta
Children of Men- I despised this movie, i thought it looked great in trailers and the plot itself was so fresh and cool but I thought it was just dark for the sake of dark and really was undescriptive about the current state of society- terrible ending- did not like it one bit

The kid church pastor and his conflict with Plainview, IMO, represented the clash between religion and faith of the old world with the capitalism and greed of the new world.

One thing to keep in mind is that Upton Sinclair was an ardent socialist, and it really shows up in this film. TWBB is clearly a denounciation of the capitalism and the unrestrained control of the economy that big corportations had. That being said, PTA did a fantastic job as did DDL...I think the problem is you're not really an artsy movie type, and well, TWBB is an artsy movie.
