Volunteering and unpaid internships are a good way to get some experience if you can swing it financially.

Most people not in school it's not an option.

BeerBaron 04-17-2012 10:49 PM

A lot of jobs also count the years you spent in college as "experience" if it was for a relevant degree.

But there are instances where that is paradoxically true... The summer between my sophomore and junior years of college (2008, the worst year of the recession) half the department I worked in for my summer job was laid off and i got my hours cut back from 32-40 a week to 8-16. (1-2 shifts basically.) I applied everyone that would take an application, including some restaurants.

Who, of course, said they weren't interested because I didn't have any experience in a restaurant. How the **** does one acquire experience in a restaurant when no restaurant will hire you because you don't have experience in a restaurant because....ahh!

thisthisthis. i've said it before. i spent one day a week volunteering from high school through college (when i was home on weekends). that experience got me my job.

there isn't one day a week you could do something for an hour or two? then in all honesty, it's unlikely i'm going to hire you. it's just not that difficult to find time to do something that's similar to the jobs you'd like to apply for.

it means they probably had applicants who did have the experience, or were 'high end' (for whatever that means in that location) that they felt they could be pickier. *shrug*
