Redskins signs Fred Smoot

The Redskins have reportedly come to terms with CB Fred Smoot.
Smoot experienced his share of off-field troubles and on-field inconsistency in Minnesota, but now returns to the team where he made his mark. At this point, with Shawn Springs still on the roster, Smoot is scheduled to play the nickel, but that could change if Springs is traded to Detroit or released after June 1. Terms of Smoot's deal are coming.

Most useless starting cornerback ever to strap on cleats.

At least he's good for one thing, now Panther fans use the term "Smooted" for any receiver steve smith blows up. Like for example "Chris McAllister got smooted today" because of the tanning smoot received when minnesota came to town in 05.

Say what you want about minnesota smoot... but when he was here, he was money.

Chucky 03-03-2007 09:14 PM

who cares about fred smoot

SeanTaylorRIP 03-03-2007 09:47 PM

Oh Gosh someone shoot me, they just said on ESPN 5 years 25 million, hopefully that was just an ESPN error getting his contract confused with London Fletcher.

BuckNaked 03-03-2007 09:47 PM

That's pretty funny, sucks for you.

SeanTaylorRIP 03-03-2007 09:48 PM

No doubt Fred Smoot could get it together back in D.C. and return to old form but he needed a 1 year deal to prove that not a long term deal.

703SKINS202 03-03-2007 11:45 PM

Smoot did sign for 5 and 25....I hate us, always overpaying like a mug.

Oh man, that's hilarious.

TheChampIsHere 03-04-2007 02:23 AM

Everyone is overpaying this FA period, so that is expected. I think its a good fit though. Smoot had his best years in WAS and can hopefully ressurect his career here. The Skins had a need at CB and they needed to adress it in FA b/c they have so few draft picks.

5 mil for a Nickel is hilarious. Oh, you silly Redskins, you make me happy to be an Eagles fan.

Staubach12 03-04-2007 09:57 AM

HYopefully they can't sign Leonard Davis now...

princefielder28 03-04-2007 09:58 AM

Well Fred got his money and now he can be quiet for the rest of his career, stupid Vikings :)

draftguru151 03-04-2007 10:12 AM

I really wish people would stop looking at the figure and saying it's a lot of money. Springs is likely to be cut so he isn't going to be a nickel back, and he probably won't see most of that money unless he plays well. If he plays bad he can be cut.

I wanted smoot for a 1 year deal and the vet min not for all that money. Plus we would sign another corner if we trade or cut springs so i still think he would be a nickel.

This is awesome. A little something to cheer me up after the Cowboys paid Davis 50 mil.

Or the "tanning" Smith received when Newman came to town in '05 and '06.

This cheers up alittle after dallas now overpaid two O-linemen. I know we needed help but wow.

It's Snyder so not likely.

swagger 03-04-2007 08:48 PM

Smoot was actually pretty solid this past year, despite losing his starting job to the rook. I think he will be pretty good back in Washington.

Vikes99ej 03-04-2007 08:50 PM

I'm surprised the Redskins had to pay Smoot to play for them.

Or not. Smoot was a joke this season.
