2008 NFL Playoffs QB Draft Observation

Check out where the playoff QBs in 2008 were drafted:

AFC
1) Kerry Collins (Round 1, #5)
2) Ben Roethlisberger (Round 1, #11)
3) Chad Pennington (Round 1, #18)
4) Philip Rivers (Round 1, #4)
5) Peyton Manning (Round 1, #1)
6) Joe Flacco (Round 1, #18)

NFC
1) Eli Manning (Round 1, #1)
2) Jake Delhomme (UDFA)
3) Tarvaris Jackson (Round 2, #64)
4) Kurt Warner (UDFA)
5) Matt Ryan (Round 1, #3)
6) Donovan McNabb (Round 1, #2)

Two undrafted, one from the second round, and the rest were first round picks.

So 9/12 were first round picks.

6/12 were top five picks.

Jeez that '04 QB class was special.

Tom Brady usually messes up the rankings.

Then there was JP...

But yeah that is pretty impressive on how it has worked out for the teams with the first round picks.

giantsfan 12-30-2008 01:20 AM

JP is very special, the team makes him wear his helmet on and off the field.

When you have the opportunity to select in the top 10, you can't screw it up.

Especially if you need a QB. Accorsi got drilled for making that huge trade for Eli, but getting the guy you think is the one that will lead the team to a Super Bowl is priceless.

An even crazier observation...

The Titans have TWO QB's drafted in the Top 5 on the roster! Cuz we're cool like that.

That is pretty weird, but the Giants also have that. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer.

Actually the Giants have two #1 overall picks.

Should they even play the games?

They should sign Tim Couch to be the 3rd QB just for the hell of it.

im very satisfied with our qb situation. i think i speak for all Giants fans when i say i wouldn't trade Eli for either of the other qbs in that draft class.

it worked out great for all 3 teams. im sure the other 2 teams feel the exact same way. nobody lost in that one.

Defense not QBs. QBs get too much credit IMO. They do alot obviously but defense means playoffs. Defense with run game and your team has a Super Bowl shot(Giants,Carolina,Ten). Almost every playoff team that has a good defense makes the playoffs. Some great offensive teams sneak into the playoffs(Arizona and San Diego from the West) but it's defense that rules in the tough divisions. And run D is more important than pass D.

PPG
Pit(1st),Ten(2nd),Bal(3rd),Phi(4th),NYG(5th),Ind(7 th),Mia(10th),Atl(11th),Car(12th),Min(13th),SD(15t h AFC West,worst team),Zona(28th,NFC West,worst team)

Rush D
Min(1),Pit(2),Bal(3),Phi(4),Ten(6),NYG(9),Mia(10), SD(11),Ari(16),Car(20),Ind(24). Very crucial, except for Indy. Without good D in 06, Peyton never wins a Superbowl though.

Pass D
Pit(1),Bal(2),Phi(3),Ind(6),NYG(8),Ten(9),Car(16), Min(18 but incredible run D), Atl(21),Mia(25),SD(31,8-8 record). Varies but the better playoff teams have pass D on top of run D.

Sacks
Pit(2),Phi(3),Min(4),Ten(5),NYG(6),Mia(8),Car(9),A tl(11),Bal(11 tie), Ari(14),Ind(16). All teams can get to the QB.

Ints
Bal(1),Ten(6),Pit(6 tie), Mia(8), NYG(9),Phi(11),Ind(11),SD(11),Ari(17),Car(21),Atl( 27)

Rushing O
NYG-1, Atl-2,Car-3,Bal-4,Min-5,Ten-7,Mia-11,SD-20(AFC West, mediocre D), Phi-22(great D plus McNabb), Pit(23-great D plus Big Ben clutch not gaudy stats), Indy 31(only one Peyton Manning), Zona-32 (NFC West, Kurt Warner not a 1st rounder)

So the conclusion for the lions draft Stafford first overall than trade back up for Bradford with the second pick overall. You are bound to get a first round bye if you do that.

Its not hard to figure where Alex Smith's gonna be two years down the road. :D

I beg to differ

tjsunstein 12-30-2008 03:23 PM

Obviously, you can screw it up but he's saying that you really can't screw up the oppurtunity to bring in someone special like that for your club. Look where screwing it up has gotten Millen and those (lion) cub scouts in Detroit.

Maybe Next Year Millen2 12-30-2008 03:29 PM

Millen took the franchise QB, he didn't pass on a top QB prospect staring him in the face.. 2002 was the just the wrong year for QBs by a long shot, just like 2003 after Palmer, 2005 with Smith and 2006 was not good for QBs for the most part. And then Millen boned up a bunch of other stuff too and IGNORED the defense entirely. Defense wins championships.

Its scary to think just how good detroit Could be with the high picks they've had.

Of course picking well in the first place would've caused them to be a better team but trading away Rogers, Williams and Bly were the dumbest moves they've made it made them an 0-16 team more than anything they've done the bast 2/3 years.

What has Bly and Williams done for their respective teams that makes them horrible trades? Rogers in hindsight was a very bad move.

OzTitan 12-30-2008 09:14 PM

Williams trade was fine for Detroit.
