Who's the most valuable front 7 defender in the NFL?

If you were starting a defense today and could pick one guy for your front 7 to start with, who would it be?

Matthew Jones 12-03-2010 11:43 AM

Maybe Ndamukong Suh. Dude's a rookie and already one of the best linemen in the league. The sky's the limit for him.

RAVENS/WIZARDS/ORIOLES 12-03-2010 11:45 AM

Haloti Ngata

And if age isn't a factor:

Ngata
Wilfork
Clay
Peppers
Suh

ElectricEye 12-03-2010 11:50 AM

Ngata, Wilfork, or Suh depending on the scheme I'm going to run. Matthews would also be right up there.

BeerBaron 12-03-2010 11:50 AM

Throw me in the with Haloti crowd. Guys that big who can move that fast are unbelievably rare. Could play NT in a 3-4 or 4-3, or end in a 3-4, or **** it.....end in a 4-3 too, why not?

Still young and in his prime too.

TheFinisher 12-03-2010 11:50 AM

Suh has been damn impressive, but I don't know if I'm ready to give him that title yet. In a year or 2 if he's still beasting, then yea I don't see how he doesn't earn that right.

Ngata is an interesting choice too, he definitely is a freak and could play anywhere along the front... but the homer in me wants to go Ware. He's been in somewhat of a slump over the past month but he's still the best pass rusher in the NFL IMO, plus he's a stud against the run and does a good job in coverage for what the Cowboys ask of him. And he's a hell of a guy :)

Matthew Jones 12-03-2010 11:50 AM

Some other studs off the top of my head:

49ers DL Justin Smith
49ers LB Patrick Willis
Bears DL Julius Peppers
Bears LB Lance Briggs
Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil
Buccaneers DL Gerald McCoy
Cardinals DL Darnell Dockett
Chargers LB Shaun Phillips
Chiefs DL Glenn Dorsey
Chiefs LB Tamba Hali
Colts DL Dwight Freeney
Cowboys LB DeMarcus Ware
Dolphins DL Randy Starks
Dolphins LB Cameron Wake
Giants DL Justin Tuck
Giants DL Osi Umenyiora
Packers LB Clay Matthews Jr.
Panthers LB Jon Beason
Patriots DL Vince Wilfork
Patriots LB Jerod Mayo
Raiders DL Richard Seymour
Raiders LB Rolando McClain
Rams DL Chris Long
Rams LB James Laurinaitis
Ravens DL Haloti Ngata
Ravens LB Ray Lewis
Ravens LB Terrell Suggs
Redskins LB Brian Orakpo
Saints LB Jon Vilma
Steelers LB James Harrison
Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons
Steelers LB LaMarr Woodley
Texans DL Mario Williams
Texans LB DeMeco Ryans
Vikings DL Jared Allen
Vikings DL Kevin Williams

Ngata is the best DL in the game, bar none.

Ware is the best pass OLB in a 34 defense.

Patrick Willis is the best inside/middle linebacker in the game.

I'd take Ngata purely because DL > *.

Comes down to those 4 for me, and it's tough to narrow from there

ThePudge 12-03-2010 11:55 AM

It's got to be Haloti Ngata. Lol at Suh getting recognition here when his team is 2-9. He's a phenomenal player who's developing into one of the best interior linemen in football. But, most valuable in the league would imply your impact is really felt on the field & in the win column. Ngata is responsible for Baltimore's defense keeping teams in check. Most physically dominant lineman in football today. The Ravens ability to control the line of scrimmage all stems off of Ngata's dominance.

Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews definitely deserve consideration, but for me it's Ngata.

Scotty D 12-03-2010 11:55 AM

Suh or Clay Matthews.

TitanHope 12-03-2010 11:58 AM

If I had to start a defense, I'm going with Ngata or Suh.

As for the title asking who is the most valuable, I think I'll go with Julius Peppers.

Remember when this was unquestionably Haynesworth? You know, that bench guy on the Redskins.

Before he took naps on the field?

ATLDirtyBirds 12-03-2010 12:05 PM

John Abraham all day every day. But really, Ngata.

TheFinisher 12-03-2010 12:06 PM

you mean this guy?

Don Vito 12-03-2010 12:33 PM

I'm a Wilfork homer but Ngata probably has to be the guy. D-Ware, Clay Matthews, Peppers, and Wilfork are right there too.

CJSchneider 12-03-2010 12:39 PM

Suh was the first name to pop into my head.

Let Suh dominate for a few more seasons like Ngata, then we'll talk.

thenewfeature06 12-03-2010 12:42 PM

Tons of guys that are playmakers whether it is 3-4 or 4-3 but first couple names that popped into my head were Ngata, Wilfork, Suh, Ware, Matthews.. etc.

Orakpo is in my top 10 to start a team with. (front 7 wise)

Jvig43 12-03-2010 12:43 PM

Any elite DT, Wilfork, Ngata. Suh ( young and dominate) etc....

I think a good DT is certainly where you start when building a defense.

PittPete 12-03-2010 12:47 PM

James Harrison is flat out the best defensive player in football in all aspects of the game. The big boys can't cover like him and the quick guys can't outmuscle him. And nobody, I mean nobody, outhits him.
