they are no where near the same class, branch is rotational guy

gpngc 07-28-2011 11:50 PM

^It's still possible because Seattle had I believe ONE DT on the entire roster before the Siavii and Branch signings...

We'll see.

I agree with you there but from the scuttle butt I've heard MeBane wasn't as great as he has been last year and the coaches weren't exactly enamoured with him. Signing a pure 2 down body is good insurance if they can't bring him back or don't want to pony up the cash.

It's not a nail in the coffin but it's not nothing either.

Pretty happy with all of these!

Don't worry. It's not like he was the only weakness on the Browns defense.

They have 30 million in cap room so I expected them to do a lot.

And miserable is probably too strong a word for JA. He has built a solid team but I hate when he spends high picks on guys like Garrett Wolfe. I hate that he ignores glaring holes at receiver and believes Webb is a solid offensive lineman. He isn't miserable. Painfully inconsistent is a more apt description.

Bob Sanders Dreadlock 07-28-2011 11:58 PM

Supposedly Vince Young to Philly on a 1 year deal.

JBCX 07-28-2011 11:58 PM

Isn't it amazing that the two most successful teams from last year (Steelers and Packers) haven't done a single thing in free agency except re-sign their own players and draft picks? And will likely not be making any kind of splash in free agency?

BlindSite 07-28-2011 11:59 PM

Mike Tolbert has re-signed with the Chargers, 1 year $1.85mill

No they made it to the Superbowl last year with what they had. What do they need to tweak?

Not really. They always do it the smart way (build through the draft).

Building through the draft is the best way. But you can't completely ignore Free Agency either.

He'll have a couple of good pre-season games against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Maybe play a couple regular season games because Vick gets knicked up. Then the Eagles will flip him for a 2nd + high end player in the off-season. Good move by Philly.

But teams such as the Colts, Steelers, and Packers almost exclusively build through the draft and do almost completely ignore free agency.

Teams such as the Patriots and Eagles have been relatively successful (winning %) as well, but are far more active in free agency and the trade market. They also build through the draft but put an emphasis on acquiring players through other means as well.

He sucked about the first four games and the ******** Browns fans gave him a bunch of **** for it, then he got switched to third DB and absolutely shut down everyone he played against.

Hes not a #1 but hes a damn good third corner to have and even a second.

Im bummed he's gone.

Joe Haden is going to be a perennial Pro Bowler. Who is the #2 CB for the Browns right now, though?

BlindSite 07-29-2011 12:09 AM

The thing is you should try to build a complete team in the draft and use free agency to either plug holes or give you a needed boost to push you over the hump.

Green bay hasn't lost anyone they can't realistically do without. The Texans on the other hand have had minor success drafting their secondary so they've found some proven players to fill the holes in the hopes it'll get them to the playoffs.

It's not necessarily right or wrong either way. The key is to do whatever it is you're going to do effectively. I know it's stating the obvious but people get caught up too much in saying it's one or the other that works, it's not.

I don't think any of these signings mean the Hawks are moving to a 3-4. They run a hybrid defense that puts 3-4 personnel in a 4-3 alignment.

And on the Mebane front.

ClaytonESPN
Brandon MeBane still negotiating, but the Alan Branch signing in SEA not affecting it. Branch will be a DE. MeBane is a DT.

Notredameleo 07-29-2011 12:13 AM

Yeah, it seems like Eric Wright is a bit of a ballhawk, reminds me of a Dre Bly after reading up on him. Hopefully our D line will cause some havoc and force opposing QBs to force throws. Solid, low risk high reward signing. I am loving Martin Mayhew more and more each and every day.

Bears are expected to sign WR Roy Williams, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys, according to league source.
