Does Rod Marinelli get another shot at Head Coaching

He's been defensive coordinator of the Bears for 2 1/2 years and they've been top ten two times ( 2010 and this year in total D ) 2011 they were top 15. This year he has them playing lights out, scoring more than Jacksonville offense ( joking ) We all know the Lions teams he had and Matt Millen didn't help him at all. 0-16 will always hangover his head, but with defensive units like this do you think he'll ever get another shot at a head coaching job?

The man who believes in the invisible will never get another HC gig.

Don't know what you mean...

Marinelli doesn't call plays despite the DC title. The 0-16 stink will never leave him. He's just too vanilla.

ChiFan24 11-06-2012 01:03 AM

Nah, we'll keep him. Thanks though.

I don't think so. There's guys who are great coordinators who just don't make good head coaches. Marinelli coached literally the worst team in NFL history, I don't think that is something you can just ignore

We've had this discussion elsewhere. Absolutely not IMO

This. [/thread]

The Bears have found a magical coordinator formula: Hire guys no one will ever want at HC. Tice has a better shot than Marinelli ever does, which is unfortunate because Marinelli is a good guy. If they had even won a single game that year, things might be different, but a historically bad season means he's likely never getting a job again.

Dave Toub though...I fear losing him.

The 49ers once tried that with Norv Turner, but then AJ Smith happened.

Very true but I would at least take a moment to crap on Matt Millen for putting that team together! How he was ever to rebuild any credibility and land back on ESPN as an analyst/commentator is beyond me!!!

Some guys are better suited as coordinators.

Ha for sure. Millen as a GM was a complete disaster. It does kinda suck for Marinelli because he seems like a good guy and a helluva coordinator, however I just think teams will pass.

Few previous head coaches who have failed miserably get another chance. Rightly or wrongly head offices will go for the hot young coordinator or college coach first.

This is the thing that I don't really get for Coaches. Some Head Coaches get fired from jobs, that 98% of Coaches would be bad at. Look at Romeo Crennel now, they gave him another shot at the job, but then you start the season with Cassell and Brady Quinn as his 2 QB's, two guys he didn't draft. So when the season tanks so does his job, and if they had a competent QB he'd likely still have his job. Some Coaches just strike out with good opportunities, but sometimes, like the Marinelli situation is just a bad all around situation where the Coach didn't have anything to do with the batch of players, he's just expected to coach that mess up.

Da-Phins 11-06-2012 08:37 PM

Hell to the no.

I dont care what kind of team you have, there's no excuse for a team to ever go 0-16.

BeerBaron 11-06-2012 08:44 PM

Another thing he has working against him is that he's 63. If he were in his 40s and spent a decade coordinating and doing well, he might be able to rehab his image enough to get another shot.

But there just isn't enough time between that terrible season and when he'll retire to do that.

When Romeo takes over that particular title, perhaps Marinelli will look a little better by comparison.

Chiefs already have a win. Regardless of what else happens, Romeo won't end up looking worse than Marinelli.

Normally I would agree but I think Matt Millen is a pretty good excuse.

Haley won the division 2 years ago with KC's talent but the GM didn't like him and fired him. KC fans are paying the price.
Marinelli was hired by Millen because he knew that Marinelli wouldn't criticize him publicly, he is simply not HCing material and never will be but he is a solid coordinator.
