Can you imagine if this happened at a game today?

This incident occurred in 1997, not that long ago. At least to me. An official actually asked the home crowd, the Detroit Lions fanbase, to be quiet so that the New York Jets offense can get a play off. If the crowd refused to do so, the Detroit Lions defense would be penalized. This was the final game of the season with a playoff spot on the line. Are officials even allowed to do this? In 2012 I know it would be a huge story in the sports world that would go on for quite some time. Take a look.

It used to be in the rules. The ref is following those rules to a "T." It was abolished in 2010. Teams still cannot utilize "artificial" noise, only the crowd.

Oh alright. Very interesting article.

OzTitan 11-10-2012 06:41 PM

What the hell. I don't remember this being true. So what, the QB can then pretend he can't hear due to the crowd noise after they were warned so they get a penalty?

This is bizzaro NFL, I can't believe this was ever the case.

I remember in a Ravens/Titans Monday Night game about 8 or so years ago, the ref (I think Hochuli) told the Titans fans to be quiet so he could explain a penalty. I thought that was simultaneously dumb and hilarious.

I saw this and thought "LOL... WUT????"

Much more towards the hilarious side.

tjsunstein 11-10-2012 09:12 PM

People didn't riot then. They just got louder. The Saints, during the Dome Patrol days, used to get warnings and flags for crowd noise quite a bit, if memory serves.

I don't think anyone has been penalized for crowd noise in a regular season game. I know the Seahawks were penalized 3 times and the Saints were penalized 4 times in preseason games because they refused to quiet down.

If I am not mistaken last year the Lions/Bears Monday night game had the same thing occur. The refs asked the crowd to quiet down or the Lions would be penalized.

I remember that game.

I see what you did there.

PoopSandwich 11-11-2012 02:17 PM

That is absurd.

This sounds vaguely familiar.

ashleywilliam 11-22-2012 05:48 AM

I also remember that game.

boknows34 11-22-2012 07:31 AM

The Silverdome crowd was going nuts that day. Barry had just scored to put the Lions ahead in the 4th qtr of a Week 17 game they needed to win to reach the playoffs, while putting himself on the verge of 2,000 yds. Often forgotten is the near fatal injury to Lions LB Reggie Brown in the 2nd half. So many emotions that day and they nearly blew the roof off with the decibel level.

In I think 1999 or 1997, Penn State was penalized for their crowd being too loud when playing Michigan. It use to be a rule. I am happy it has since been changed.

MidwestJimmy 11-27-2012 11:49 AM

The refs should tell the crowd that fat guys should keep their shirts on at all times.

I was about to mention this same thing but for some reason I thought the Titans were facing the Raiders. I remember Fisher being like wtf that isn't a rule and then he started to raise his hands up to get the crowd louder.
