Kyle Long, OT / OG, Oregon

Not sure if it was posted but Oregon OT / OG Kyle Long was denied a sixth year by the NCAA:

Quote:

EUGENE — Senior offensive lineman Kyle Long said he is disappointed that his first season with the Ducks will be his last.

"The decision, it was out of my hands the whole time," said Long, who found out this week that his appeal for another season of eligibility was denied by the NCAA.

"You can plan a pretty picnic, but you can't predict the weather — that's what Outkast said," Long said after practice Wednesday. "So you gotta have a plan and stick with it, and that's what we're trying to do here. ...

"Just very appreciate of all the people in the Eugene area and all Duck fans across the country for their support over the last few months (and) for everybody adopting me as one of their own. ... The main thing is I want to keep working toward my degree. I wouldn't have been finished until next year regardless. So I need to come up with a plan to keep my academic focus intact."
A 23rd-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2008, Long began his college career as a hard-throwing, left-handed pitcher at Florida State. His career at FSU was cut short after he was arrested for driving under the influence in January 2009, but he eventually remade himself as a football player at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., then signed with the Ducks earlier this year.

He played in 10 of 12 games for the Ducks this season, taking over the starting job at left guard after a series of injuries on the offensive line. He had never played guard until the week leading up to Oregon's game against USC on Nov. 3.

"He had a great impact on us," UO coach Chip Kelly said. "Great kid. Really just a good person to be around. Great teammate. A tremendous football player."

With his family lineage — his father, Howie, is in Pro Football Hall of Fame and his brother, Chris, was the No. 2 overall pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2008 — Long is an intriguing NFL draft prospect as a versatile, 6-foot-7, 311-pound lineman.

"Tackle, guard — I just want to play," Long said. "I'm a hungry kid who just wants an opportunity."

Love that he quoted Outkast! :o)

I've added Long to my rankings and he is clearly going to be one of the more intriguing blockers available in the 2013 NFL Draft. Definite Top 100 possibility when you factor in his extremely impressive physical tools, huge upside, versatility and of course those NFL bloodlines.

The Outkast quote is killing me.

"You can plan a pretty picnic, but you can't predict the weather." Dude moved up my draft rankings for that.

This is shaping up to be a very good/deep draft for o-linemen

His dad Howie and brother Chris both say he might be the most athletic of all the Longs.

I wonder how high he goes??

Every Dad or player i ever knew said the younger brother was the best so that aside i really like Long's demeanor on the football field. Not sure just how nimble he is to be playing left tackle so i'd project him to the right side. If i had to predict who got the old man's nastiness it would be Kyle.

I'd guess highest is 2nd round depending on Combine and all that.

Leon Sandcastle 12-31-2012 11:08 AM

Chip Kelly could conceivably draft him when he's hired by an NFL team within the next few weeks.

Ms Jackson is an easy quote. If he woulda quoted Bombs over Baghdad I would have really been impressed. Or maybe if he said "let bygones be bygones u go and get the hell on u and yo momma" to the NCAA.

Bombs over Baghdad was a pretty popular song in the mid-00s.

Always love to hear an unexpected prospect is entering the draft.

At this point, I think Long is a 4th round talent. Let's not act like he still has some amazing college resume', he doesn't. He has a big "football family" name and a mediocre resume'. He has good athletic ability, but he still needs coached up because he played baseball and was in JC so many years.

I could see him moving up the boards into the mid-late 2nd, but right now I think he's a 4th rounder

Agree. I think, as you imply, that had he played tackle right out of HS, where he was one of the better linemen in the country, we'd probably be talking about a first round pick.

At worst i think he can be a Kevin Gogan/Alex Boone type guard, one of those big nasty, mauler types. At best Long is probably a Jermey Trueblood type tackle that can play in the league for many years. He isn't the athlete his brother is regardless of what family members say.

Couldn't watch the game but I was reading he was a monster tonight.

I was very impressed with Long in the Fiesta Bowl. Needs some polish but was making it look pretty easy. Loved the aggressiveness and mobility. I'm looking forward to seeing Long play some offensive tackle at the Senior Bowl, but he's certainly no slouch inside at guard.

Really took it to Arthur Brown early in the game at the second level.
