Sam Montgomery, DE, L.S.U.

Safe to say the combine/pro day schedule is the time when college coaches get back at the ones that were a little lazy during their last year.

Apparently that lsu strength coach sign for players wasn't just motivational for Mr.Montgomery

I want to like Montgomery but he continues to make it more difficult

According to NFL Draft insider Tony Pauline, LSU's coaches are not giving LSU DE Sam Montgomery a "ringing endorsement" to NFL teams.

College coaches -- especially assistants -- are typically brutally honest with NFL clubs, and it was no secret that Montgomery wasn't beloved by LSU's staff. A projected second-day draft pick, Montgomery is a base 4-3 end. His Tigers bookend, Barkevious Mingo, is expected to be a 3-4 outside 'backer in the pros. Feb 22 - 5:29 PM

Doomed. 3rd round, at best.

Bert Macklin 02-23-2013 07:53 PM

It's BS LSU coaches would never badmouth their own players. Especially if they aren't talking crap about Russell Shepard.

General Zod 02-23-2013 11:03 PM

Um yeah....dude is not smart.

It isn't exactly "badmouth(ing)" if what they are telling the NFL coaches is the truth. Nothing wrong with them being honest about a player.

Just to point out, this isn't a new thing brought up for the offseason. This was originally leaked prior to the season.

And reiterated the past few days at the combine which means nothing changed this past season.

Which IMO makes it worse, guy simply doesnt care.

Reiterated by who? It'd be very unlikely that its the LSU coaches, as has been suggested, considering they came out and defended the players, specifically calling them hard workers. While scouts may be forming their own negative opinions of Montgomery, I seriously doubt its because the LSU coaches are working behind his back.

And it gets worse, he doesn't need the coaches to say anything.....you want to back him, go ahead...

"In his Combine media interview, LSU DE Sam Montgomery admitted to betting in college and taking games -- not plays -- games off when the Tigers faced lesser opponents.
Montgomery's agent should have advised him before the Combine that saying things like this is not smart. At all. "Some weeks when we didn’t have to play the harder teams, there were some times when effort was not needed," Montgomery said. "But when we had the big boys coming in, the ‘Bamas or the South Carolinas, I grabbed close to those guys and went all out." Montgomery detailed "hundreds of dollars" in bets with teammate Barkevious Mingo, including one for $5,000 on which LSU defensive end will be drafted higher. We'd wager -- heavily -- that it won't be Montgomery. Draft insider Tony Pauline reported late Saturday that LSU's coaching staff has been "slamming" Montgomery to NFL teams. "

Not hearing very many good things about him right now. Can anyone sell me on him? What are his positives and when should he be drafted?

K Train 02-26-2013 07:22 PM

lol sam must have been pretty damn confident to bet 5k on going higher than mingo, mingo is clearly going to go higher even if he doesnt end up being the better player

Monomach 02-26-2013 07:26 PM

Wouldn't touch him until the sixth and seventh rounds. That's where I take my boom-or-busts that I have no expectations from.

fatso 02-26-2013 09:40 PM

Decent bull rush, very slow off the snap, and character concerns. Not the good kind of character concerns, either.

No thx

Is he really a boom-or-bust? Seems like the type that probably won't do much once he gets paid.

Grizzlegom 03-11-2013 12:06 PM

:bump:

His agent decided to part ways with him today. Wouldn't even have this guy on my board at this point.

Cigaro 03-11-2013 12:09 PM

Well that's not good. I prefer him as a player to Mingo, but it does seem these personality issues are quite serious after all.

raphael 03-11-2013 12:35 PM

Mingo is pretty sketchy as well. Also Dion Jordan. DaMonster is DaMan.

BamaFalcon59 03-11-2013 12:48 PM

Amazing how players can give up such an opportunity. Life changing opportunity.

He siphoned gas in high school I believe so that's the only knock anyone could possibly find.

yeah im pretty sure that was from one car to another in a way that wasnt stealing gas from someone, just trying to transfer gas which led to bad burns if i remember correcty (using a vaccum or something?)

hes like the nicest guy, and on top of that he dazzled at the combine at a very legit weight of 248 when i was expecting him to be around 225 and way to thin. Nothing sketchy about him

killxswitch 03-11-2013 01:07 PM

Montgomery used to go top 20 in mocks. Lol.
