Best Return Man in the NFL (Current)

We all know how good Hester was and also Cribbs, and while still threats they have not been explosive as of late?

Who do you guys have as the top 5 return men in the game currently?

1)Trindon Holliday
2)Jacoby Jones
3)Leodis McKelvin
4)Joe McKnight
5)Leon Washington

Don Vito 04-02-2013 02:26 PM

I would probably but Jacoby Jones at #1 right now.

Caulibflower 04-02-2013 02:37 PM

Um... Percy Harvin?

Denver Bronco56 04-02-2013 02:39 PM

I completly forgot about Harvin..

But you have to take in account that once Trindon got the gig in Denver, he led the NFL in return punt and kick return yardage.. and taking in account what he did in the playoffs had never been done I think in my mind he is the #1

ChiFan24 04-02-2013 02:49 PM

It doesn't necessarily answer the question posed in this thread, but if I need one awesome kickoff return, I'm probably putting Danieal Manning back there. Guy morphs into Adrian Peterson on crack. Trindon is a fine #1 though.

The top 5 has 3-4 new faces in it every year.

I would say for a 2-3 year period Hester was no question the best followed by Cribbs...but they have some what fallen off

This.

It would be interesting to see the statistics on what positions are the most static vs. the most mercurial. I would guess that "return man" would have the most turnover.

I feel it should be mentioned that kick returner and punt returner are two separate positions. This distinction is made even more relevant given the recent changes to kick-offs. I don't know if it's just me, but I seem to notice more teams using separate kick and punt returners... am I just imagining things?

Also, rookies tend to have a higher rate of success as returners than at other positions. Some of the most gifted athletes coming out of college are used to return kicks/punts while they adjust to the NFL. Many of these players are then taken off special teams when they have success as a starter on offense or defense in order to minimize risk of injury.

I think this makes players like Devin Hester, Josh Cribbs, and Leon Washington relatively rare.

So, this question is really impossible to answer. The "current" top five kick or punt returners can technically be determined by the most recent seasons statistics. I think the question was meant more as a projection for future success... at least next season, anyway.

Instead of giving a list of players, I'll list the most desirable traits in order:

1) Ball security

2) Situational awareness

3) Consistency

4) Durability

5) Game changing play threat

I guess I'm pretty conservative in my football philosophy. I've seen more returners lose games for their team than win them, I think.

I think teams can have a designated return man, exe (dante hall, devin hester) having a threat to bust one long or set the O up in good position is very valuable.

being 5'5 160lb i see Trindon Holliday being just that a return man only, and he has been outstanding on both kick and punt returns so i dont think it really is a distinction if your return man is good at both.

princefielder28 04-04-2013 08:49 AM

There's quite a few quality return men in the league right...Randall Cobb hasn't gotten a mention yet and he's pretty damn good too.

Literally said "What......what?.." when i saw that play.

Gotta go with Jacoby Jones based on last year. Not only was he the best return specialist in the league last year but he has added value as a receiver.

You learn to expect it when Stefan Logan is around.
