Lawrence Okoye, Discus Thrower, England

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...gional-combine

I remember watching this guy in the discus final of Lonon 2012 hoping he would win and they were talking about how he didn't know if he was going to pursue a career in football or not. Well he is.

He just participated in the regional combine. This kid is a freak.

21 years old
6'6
300 lbs
4.8 forty
10'5 broad jump
35' vertical

So his story is he played rugby until about 18, but he wanted to do discus. After two years of training he was in the final of the London 2012 Olympics (at only 20 years old). Now he's done that, he's decided he wants to play football! He's always had an interest in the game, but has only recently chosen to act on it.

If Ziggy Ansah can do it, Okoye can too. And he has the work ethic to go along with his amazing physical attributes. Apparently there's a possibility he gets drafted.

Please keep this kid on the defensive side of the football!!!!
JJ Watt approves.

Does anyone think he gets drafted??
If he's there in the 7th, I'd take him without question. Maybe even earlier.

mqtirishfan 04-07-2013 07:51 PM

I wouldn't be angry if the Packers took him in the 7th.

fenikz 04-07-2013 07:54 PM

pretty freakish

Some team will throw a draft pick at him. His rugby history will help him because teams will know he isn't bothered by the physicality.

Robcards 04-07-2013 09:20 PM

Jets should draft him to play QB.

K Train 04-07-2013 09:24 PM

I have been following this the last 2 weeks or so, Id love to take a flier on him and see what he can do

OSUGiants17 04-07-2013 09:30 PM

His measurables are nice, but he is a huge project. He doesn't even have a position. With that said, I still wouldn't be shocked at all to see a team take him in the 7th or at the very least bring him into camp.

Shane P. Hallam 04-07-2013 09:33 PM

He should switch to position of discus. He'd know what the thrower was thinking.

Brothgar 04-07-2013 09:33 PM

Didn't the Jags just agree to having a game a year in the UK I see him as a fit there.

Caulibflower 04-07-2013 09:54 PM

Not gonna lie, I want the Seahawks to draft him. This is as elite as an athlete gets, he's only 21, and he's a rugby player, so he's accustomed to contact. Throw him in as a big defensive end and he's going to go insane. I'd take him with a 4th round pick.

...OR MAKE HIM A TIGHT END.

I REALLY wish Jonah Lomu had decided to play in the NFL. :(

Man, I'd hate to Bruce Irvin them again, haha.

Margus Hunt at 26 years old or this guy at 21? Um...Gimme this guy. Why aren't any colleges recruiting him?

he would definitely have a better chance of going pro and sticking if he played college ball for at least a year

FUNBUNCHER 04-07-2013 11:08 PM

Yeah I agree he's getting bad advice to just enter the draft right now and not play at least a season in college.
If he played just two seasons at a BCS school and showed anything, he could be a first round pick in 2014.

If an NFL team is patient for 3-4 years with this guy, there could potentially be a huge payoff.

The problem is, if you leave him on the practice squad, you risk another team poaching him. And is he able to contribute enough on special teams and sub-packages to make the final 53 man roster???

descendency 04-07-2013 11:10 PM

Between him, Jeff Demps, Phillip Rivers, and Tim Tebow the NFL could have their own track and field team.

I don't think he is allowed to go NCAA because of his pro rugby career. I do wonder if that will help things like tackling technique and stamina.

What event would Tim Tebow participate in? Didn't know the Olympics had a barrel forward for a 2 yard gain or throw a wobbly pass 15 yards out of bounds event.

Well, Alabama has a walk-on safety in Jai Miller that played baseball for 7-8 years before deciding to go to school, so I wouldn't think that would be an issue(but who knows with the NCAA).

stlouisfan37 04-08-2013 01:02 AM

Yeah, I agree that this kid should go to college for a couple of years. He could play two years and still be drafted at 23.
