Video Game Discussion Thread

It's time for change. For years, we've had fragmented discussion threads for video games. With fewer and fewer exclusives, there's a tremendous amount of overlapping discussions that people miss out on since they only check one thread.

...and why? Are we really not mature enough to deal with someone purchasing a different piece of plastic housing than the one we chose? Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft are multi-billion dollar corporations. The fact that some people feel the need to be a cheerleader for either of them is absurd. We're able to discuss other topics without trolling each other to death when more than one company is involved(...with the notable exception of Apple and Android. But that's mostly because of BBD. Ends mostly civilly too.
). We've had a few E3 threads that mostly go OK. There's some contentious posting going on at times, but nothing that breaks forum rules or isn't just differences that could be worked out over time.

With new consoles coming out in less than a month, now seems a pretty good time to address these issues and try something new. Traffic is dying in those threads anyway. The Xbox 360 thread recently without a new post. Weeks without posts for the Playstation thread have been common for a long time. The Wii thread hasn't had any posts in two years. There's not really any thread at all where it's appropriate to talk about anything with Nintendo. Contraction makes sense.

With that said, let's lay down some thread rules;

1. Follow all of the standard forum rules

2. If you feel the need to start console-war asshattery, the other threads are still around. Discussing the merits and faults of consoles is fine, but do so in an objective and courteous matter.

Examples:

GOOD

Quote:

The Kinect/TV services doesn't really offer much for me, Playstation 4 is a better value for me.
Quote:

I prefer the ergonomics of the Xbox controller to the Dualshock.
Quote:

Nintendo consoles don't offer enough games I'm interested in to justify a purchase.
Quote:

The flexibility and superior specifications make PC the better platform for me
BAD

Quote:

XBONE SUCKS, RROD AD BOX LOL UMAD
Quote:

PS4 HAS NO GAMES
Quote:

NINTENDO IS FOR BABIES I ONLY PLAY MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE GAMERS LIKE MYSELF. WII U MORE LIKE PEE U AM I RITE?
Quote:

LOL PC MUSTURD RACE CONSOLES NEED TO KETCHUP ENJOY YOUR FACEBOOK BUTTON DRMBOX ***s
All of that is should be fairly obvious, but basically, try to avoid calling people "fanboys" or being fanboys. Sega and Nintendo went at eachother hard with adversarial marketing to engender brand loyalty in the 90's, but times have changed and we're not on the back of a school bus anymore.

3. Discussion of older games is welcome and actively encouraged. This was extremely hard to find the right venue for with split threads. I suppose things like smartphone games are welcome too.

4. Posting and discussing news is completely OK. Sourcing things is good if it helps.

5. The other threads still exist. You don't need to post in this one, especially if you can't handle intermingling with people who have needs and preferences different than your own.

With that said, let's give this a try. I think we can handle it.

I don't want to mix with dirty consolers.

Hurricanes25 10-16-2013 07:28 PM

My favorite game of all time:

You'll mix and you'll like it.

That said, there's some Kingdom Hearts III gameplay out as of yesterday. Seems appropriate to kick this off with some of that considering it's multi-plat now by the sounds of it.

I'll give it a shot. It's been such a long time since I've played one of those games and I didn't really enjoy the second one....but the first one had legitimate charm to it. If they can go back to that and away from convoluted anime melodrama, it could still be a great game.

That whole vg discussion in the rdt makes me want to pull out the PS2 and pop in some old school classics.

Soul Reaver and Legacy of Kain anyone?

CC.SD 10-16-2013 07:37 PM

let's make sure to get this on page 1.

I've been playing a lot of older stuff I missed out on. Never tried that series, but I've heard good things.

Recently went through and beat Metroid Zero Mission. I've never really tried the Metroid series before, but after reading a pretty cool article about the series on Kotaku, I really felt like I had to jump in. Can't say I regret it. Really love that formula. I've played a ton of similar games(almost all of the Castlevania games, Cave Story) but I really felt that was right up there with the best of those sorts of games. Plan on going through the rest of the series at some point soon.

The art direction is just so cool. Reminds me a lot of Alien in some ways.

Raiderz4Life 10-16-2013 08:18 PM

Castlevania is one series I regret never picking up

Funny, I was a Samus user in Super Smash Bros. but I think I played 1/4 of a metroid game on gba.

Trogdor 10-16-2013 08:27 PM

Wait even PC gamers have to come discuss things in here? :/ I feel like I need a shower already.

Titanfall is going to be amazing. Those of you playing FPS's on consoles need to have computers by then so we can all have fun-times.

Jvig43 10-16-2013 08:30 PM

I need to get rid of this mac and get a good PC.

vidae 10-16-2013 10:33 PM

PS4 HAS NO GAMES! Had to, sry!

vidae 10-16-2013 10:34 PM

ps I'm going to play. the. ****. out of Titanfall. That game looks amazing.

I can only speak for the remake of the first one, but they seem to really be quite good.

I've kind of recently taken an interest in game design as a hobby(programmer friend and I have some things moving around in Unity, nothing major), so I sort of get hard for games like that. It's design porn. The player is basically dropped into a world and asked to discover all it has to offer in order to complete the game. Nothing is told explicitly(although there's certainly hints) to you, which makes it all the more satisfying when you find an upgrade that allows you to kill a boss you couldn't before. Really fits with the somber, isolated atmosphere the story and art direction illustrate so wonderfully.

The level design is absolutely suburb too. The attention to detail with how it all fits together and the way the stages themselves interact with the emergent mechanics is just mindblowing. Amazingly innovative for the time too. It's one of the first games ever made where going left is a thing.

More than down to help you spec one out and point you in the right direction for stuff if you get the dough together. Just let me know man.

...and yeah, Titanfall looks pretty good. I'm a sucker for any kind of mech. You can see the Call of Duty influence as well. That's not a bad thing though. I've always sort of liked the arcadeyness and fast pace compulsion loop those games offered. I'm just sick to death of playing the same game with different maps and arbitrary nerfs. It's just stale. Titanfall's jumping and mech mechanics look like they'll be the adrenaline shot those games need.

It's actually been a good while since an FPS hooked me. Battlefield 3 was a bit of a letdown for me and I just have a harder and harder time getting excited for military shooters at this point. Nothing wrong with those if you enjoy them, but I've just played that game so many times at this point.

So what's rule #3?

JRTPlaya21 10-16-2013 11:24 PM

Arkham Origins will be mine. That is all.

That I can't count.

I had added something else but forgot to re-format it. Sorry about that.

On a subject other than my ineptitude at numbering things;

Since it's October, I feel like it's as good of a time as any to play something somewhat spooky. I don't really do the kind of indie horror games that seem to be coming out in droves lately, so I went with Resident Evil 6.

...and what an absolutely shameful piece of garbage that game is. I don't have great affection for the series beyond 4(5 was decent to average, 2 was very good but the tank controls REALLY weren't my thing), but 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. They really stripped away a lot of what made that game great. The pace of both the story and the gameplay is just all off right from the get-go. Just feels very sloppy and unfocused. I'm also sort of pissed they took away all the inventory management and weapon upgrades. That was something that worked very well for the previous games.

I've read that they had a truly massive team working on that game. Really shows. Assassin's Creed 3 kind of ran into similar issues. Both games really feel like they came off of a production line without any clear goal or focus. I might try slugging through the rest of it to see if it gets any better(two hours into the Leon campaign right now), but I may just toss it and move on. Revelations is supposed to be a better game and there's a fairly decent sale for it going on right now. Maybe I'll go with that instead.

Raiderz4Life 10-17-2013 03:01 AM

RE3 is the only one I've played. Played a little Code: Veronica but not much. Was always interested by the story though. Will have to play through a few at some point.

nepg 10-17-2013 03:11 AM

I played RE1 and a little bit of RE2, but really haven't played any RE since.

For spooky games, I'm thinking about giving Amnesia another go. I quit after playing a bit when it came out because I really just didn't like feeling like that while playing a video game. lol.

Raiderz4Life 10-17-2013 03:16 AM

I remember I got nightmare creatures for n64 back in my day and I was too scared to play at night lol

I bought a game cube for the RE franchise a few years ago. Love it. I couldn't play the fear 3 demo with the lights off. I'll admit to that.

God the dead space games have gone to ****. 1 was great. 2 was very good. I can't finish 3 although I will try this weekend. I might just go trade in my 360 and put that towards my PS4.

So bummed watch dogs was pushed back. Looking forward to that. Also looking forward to DBZ Battle of Z.

I only played a small bit of 5, but I tried 6 at a friends house with him for a while and it was so god damn bad. Never once in my play through was I having fun. If you want something spooky and slightly cheaper, Ive heard good things about Slender the awakening. I played Slender man and it was pretty scary for such a simple concept.

ImBrotherCain 10-17-2013 09:49 AM

Oh god AC3... I got that when it came out last year and just stopped playing. I rebooted it a few weeks ago when I was bored and with AC4 coming out and I think I have stalled in the same section.

I just don't feel compelled to finish it but I really want to see where the series goes despite the game really being a drag at times.

Jvig43 10-17-2013 09:53 AM

Thats another one I picked up and had very little "fun" with. It was just so lame. Walk two feet, five minute cut scene. Walk another two feet, five minute cut scene. Good lord just have the two together. I loved the idea of that game but it was so meh.

I haven't played 3 but I heard this.

The tyranny of the king DLC with Washington as king of America had me very excited. I'd like to play that one day.

But black flag looks like it might be the best in the franchise. I remember multiplayer on brotherhood. Played that with friends for hours at a time.
