Offense or Defense Wins Championships????

O or D???

i believe offense, colts got to the playoffs last year basically because of there offense. Oakland was the worst team in the NFL last year but had one of the top ranked defenses. sure the ravens and steelers make you think defense wins championships but offense can truly dominate if you have a dominating offense.

neko4 04-12-2007 07:39 PM

Good arguement, look at the '04 Skins, they had the 2nd ranked D, but no offense and went 6-10
Most people say though that Offense wins games and defense wins championships

Moses 04-12-2007 07:40 PM

It's a combination of the two. One doesn't work without the other.

stephenson86 04-12-2007 07:40 PM

i think u need both, patriots wouldnt have won without their signal caller, nor would they of won without their defense

Yeah, this has come up before I think too in another thread. Very rarely does a team that relies solely on offense or defense win the big one. If you can't stop anyone you wont win. If you cant score on anyone, you wont win. You don't have to be dominant at both, but you gotta be pretty damn good at both.

Obviously you can't win with one without the other. The Raiders last year is a terrible example, because words do not even come near to describing that offense. Look at a team like the bears, they got to the super bowl last year with Rex Grossman at QB. While there offense wasn't stellar, it was able to control the ball, and score when they were supposed to score.

The defense controls the game, but do that in full effect, it needs an offense to, at the very least, generate yardage.

Yeah, to an extent. An average offense and great defense will get you farther than a great offense and average defense.

LionSmack 04-12-2007 07:46 PM

Indy's D played pretty excellent in the playoffs

Ewing 04-12-2007 07:46 PM

Neither; teams win championships not Offense or Defense.

True. Both of those scenarios would get you far though. Defense would probably carry more weight, because a team can find many ways to score (Special teams, interceptions, fumble recoveries, field goals) but only one real way to lock down the other team. Still, You can't just be great at one thing...usually.

Deffense wins games, offense sells tickets.

Well that's a corruption of the original saying. I've heard the tickets part for offense, but defense always wins championships in the sayings.

RaiderNation 04-12-2007 08:11 PM

i think they have to be balenced to be a great team for example the steelers has a top ranked defence and a running game to they both helped each other

49erfaithful 04-12-2007 08:20 PM

you need both in order win it all. But if you have a great defense, then you just need an offense that wont mess up and turn it over, same goes for a strong offesive team.

cardsalltheway 04-12-2007 08:23 PM

The Colts' offense got them to the playoffs, but the defense was why they finally won.

But if it wasn't for there offense they would have lost to the Pats. The Colts had both, in 3 of the games the defense carried the team, but the offense did eat up yardage with the run and take alot of time off the clock. If the Colts had been behand in any of those games in the second half the offense would have been alot different and might have put up a bunch of points for another comeback.

Offense wins games, defense wins championships sounds more like it

indyfan1985 04-12-2007 10:53 PM

Neither. Teams win Championships. The Colts won this year because the team played with great chemistry. The Defense stepped up when it needed to in the playoffs, and Peyton and the offense took what the defense gave them.

TACKLE 04-12-2007 11:01 PM

No way Indy would have a had a chance to win the Super Bowl if they're defense didn't step up in the playoffs. A weak D is why they were never able to make it to the Super Bowl before.

PACKmanN 04-12-2007 11:04 PM

Why do ppl foget about ST? the Pats won all there SB in the 20s because of ST, the packers won there sb in 96 because of ST. You also need a pretty soild ST.

art vandelay 04-12-2007 11:06 PM

Definitely defense. Without a doubt.

Paul 04-12-2007 11:21 PM

Dominating Defense. Efficient Offense.

yodabear 04-12-2007 11:41 PM

Can't win a game without scoring any points. Can win a game without giving up any points.

BiggerFoot 04-12-2007 11:49 PM

It has to be a complete team, don't forget about half of the Bears offense was special teams and Hester giving them great field position if not scoring himself. You can not put Defense above Offense or vise versa, you must have a complete team.

Thomas7399 04-13-2007 11:22 AM

Didnt the SB Ravens go the entire month of October without scoring a TD?
