Gates gets new deal
Chargers extend Gates through 2015 season
Quote:
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that the team has extended six-time Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates for five years. The deal averages $7.235 million annually and includes $20.4 million guaranteed.
According to Mortensen, the deal makes Gates the highest paid tight end in football.

He's not really frugal. He likes players like Gates who are great on and off the field, and will reward them fairly. Look at Rivers last year, and the numerous signing we've had over the years. The problem is that you can't sign every major star on the team to a max contract. You pick and choose your battles.

I can understand being reluctant to lock up Jackson with the off the field trouble but I would have locked up Marcus McNeill along time ago.

I think they tried to but the injury concerns (spinal issues?) must be holding them back. I remember hearing rumors of them trying to extend him back in 2008, but that was before McNeill injured his neck that year.
Edit: This is pure speculation at the moment, but it makes sense.

The Chargers had indicated that they wanted to get a deal with Gates in place before focusing on reaching an agreement with Left Tackle Marcus McNeill. With a deal out of the way, this may open the door for McNeill and the Chargers to enter into talks.

Yeah, they should have been working on McNeil first. But Gates is a monster. Deserves this completely.

Meh, McNeil's got a degenerative back condition where it could go out at literally any time. And he's gotten worse every year he's been in the NFL. It's not a good thing when you're rookie season is your best one.
Truth be told, I'd be wary of locking him up to an exorbitant amount of money, too.

Gates is one of my favorite players in the league, consistently gets it done and keeps a low profile. Pretty humble guy from what I understand, probably has something to do with how he broke into the league. Gates is a great success story, I can't stand the Chargers but I've always liked Gates.

Even though he is a Charger, he deserves the money. Has been the best TE in the league for awhile

I was surprised to read that he hadn't missed a game in 4 years...I could swear he always seems to be battle toe or foot problems. I guess he just plays through it then.

McNeil and Jackson both want new contracts and they extend gates? Wise move from a perspective of keeping him happy, bad move at the expense of pissing off two others.

*Sniper sees title, then cringes in horror*
Pretty solid deal, though. I'd extend the left tackle before the tight end, but still a good deal.

This is his last year with us. And of course, they go for the guy who keeps his mouth shut and doesn't try to demand a new contract and threaten to hold out ie. Dbrick Ferguson with the Jets and Dumervil with the Broncos. If anything this will hopefully show the other two that if they had dealt with their contract issues like Gates, and signed their tender and made it to camp, that they would have also been richly rewarded as well.

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Isn't it funny how ridiculously good at football I am Ladainian?
I don't think I've ever lost to the Raiders, maybe my rookie year when Drew sucked choad
One time I shat on John Lynch it was awesome
That Ram has a huge contract now because I touched him
God I am so good
I am also a fine basketball player!
Who cares about anything when you have Gates to score all the touchdowns

Or showing that you get a new deal by performing and being a team player. This was going to happen anyway, it has no effect on either of those guys negotiations.

I think that as much business has been made over McNeil and Jackson, Gates and Rivers are really what make that offense tick. Sure, losing one or both of the others would hurt, but Gates has been a monster for years and is still relatively young and plays like it. He opens up that entire passing offense, seeing as how he's the only one who runs intermediate routes. Hes invaluable to that offense and its nice to see a guy who doesn't hold out and make a big fuss over his contract get a nice extension he deserves. Vincent Jackson should take notes.

Well, now I know how much it will cost to extend Vernon Davis. :(
