Default Aaron Maybin: Worst player in the NFL?

I remember a lot of experts thinking Maybin was going to be a stud.
I feel bad for Bills fans though.

But just think, he was way more highly touted as a 3-4 OLB than Clay Matthews was.

Interesting article.

I thought he was going to be a stud...I still can't believe he's been so incredibly bad. I knew he was COMPLETELY undeveloped physically and would need a year or two to get there but I thought he'd at least be serviceable in the interim. I thought he was miscast as a 4-3 DE and thought he'd thrive in the new 3-4 scheme they were switching to.

The biggest thing that boggles me is that I keep hearing that he has been lazy and hasn't been putting in the extra time. When he was here at Penn State, he was one of the hardest working players on the team. I guess all the rumors of him just wanting to get his money and run were more true than I thought...

Still too early to right this guy off. He was extremely raw coming otu and has already had to deal with one complete defensive scheme overhaul and is now going through another one

He was always a boom or bust player. Sadly for Bills fans its the latter and now he's a healthy scratch with the Bills switching back to a 4-3.

Wait a sec..... what's the deal there with the Bills defensive alignment?
I thought this year they switched to a 3-4. I should know since we played them in week 2....

we play both, but 4-3 more now with Stroud-Williams-Troup-Edwards the D-Line. Kelsay-Davis-Poz the LBers. and when teams had 3 WRs we went to a 4-2 look all season.

Its what happens with guys who in college just run by the tackle and never decide to learn technique. Maybin, Gholston.

Everyone's eyebrows were raised when they took him, especially with Orakpo staring them in the face.

That GM got the knife with Jauron too, right?

We didn't raise our eyebrows, we just hung our heads. There was heavy talk of us taking Maybin before the draft, we were all just praying it wouldn't happen.

We didn't have a GM, per se.
We had more of a 3-headed monster, which consisted of our marketing director, Russ Brandon, scouting director, Tom Modrak, and someone else I'm currently forgetting.

But yeah, the Bills didn't have a GM at this point in time, and fans are still wondering who made the decisions on draft day.

I hung my head, then had a fit a 2 year old would be proud of... I didnt believe the rumors and whispers before the draft because they sounded obsurd, although draft day my prayers were that "it wouldn't happen"...

Yet he was still drafted high? I thought he wouldve fell to the 3rd round at earliest after that. Plus he was raw. I just never saw what everyone else saw.
Pretty much, a spot on assessment of what actually happened leading up to the draft, I didnt see it either, although I did think he would go at the end of the 1st myself, just based on the potential. The adding weight and slowing down made him useless before the draft, which leads me to this...

Brandon is thankfully a full time marketing/administration type now (and a good one), why he touched the personel side of this franchise is beyond reason... Tom Modrak, rumor has it wanted to take Cushing and was over ruled somehow (word on the street, in print, on the air waves and on that intranet thing) by DICK JAURON (might be the guy being forgotten... with good cause). If my memory serves me, Jauron was the one who made the major push for Maybin, and said that was what he needed to make "his" 4-3 defense work. Modrak however has been involved in the drafting process for the Bills for the last decade (not a good one from the draft side) and is still with the team... How he was not fired after drafting Maybin is also mystifying... Really how anyone in the scouting department is around to this day is... There are no words... Orakpo was the obvious choice at that point by 31 other teams and 99% of draftniks with a clue. It pains me to watch him in Washington every sunday... Oher would have also worked at the time...

It's a toss-up between Gholston and Maybin as who's the bigger 3-4 hybrid bust.

Gholston has more production (and that's saying somethin') than Maybin, but Gholston was touted as the next Mario Williams. One has been shittier, but came with less promise and hype than the other one.

Honestly, the Bills are shafted worse though, cause Rex Ryan made that defense one of the best (if not the best) in the league WITH a top ten bust on the team.

I feel bad for Bills fans for having to put up with this. In most states, even bad teams are the best team in their state. In NY, you can be pretty good and still be 3rd best.

Usually at least one of the teams from Florida or California sucks really bad.
