Rank the QB Prospects: 2011 and 2012 Draft
Always fun to do these, rank the QB's from this years and last years draft from best to worst. I'm going off how I viewed these prospects coming out of college, and not what we have all already seen from them...
1 Andrew Luck (2012)
Automatic #1, we all know Luck will at least be a very good QB that can lead your team and organzition for the next 10+ years.
2 Cam Newton (2011)
I was a huge Cam fan from the first game of the season while he was at Auburn, and was easily the top choice last year.
3 Robert Griffin III (2012)
RG3 is right on par with Cam as a prospect, but I don't think he will have near the success in his rookie year.
4 Jake Locker (2011)
Locker took a step back from the #1 overall pick hype, but I (still) have no doubts he should be a top 10 QB in the league in his prime.
5 Ryan Mallett (2011)
If my team needed a QB to develop in the mid/late 1st I would have taken Mallett despite the character issues, you can't teach that type of arm strength.
6 Ryan Tannehill (2012)
Tannehill has a bright future ahead of him if he lands on the right team, and isn't rushed onto the field like the next prospect on my list.
7 Blaine Gabbert (2011)
Gabbert has the tools to be a NFL QB, but as I thought he struggled all year long for the Jags.
8 Andy Dalton (2011)
I didn't see Dalton having the big impact he had last year, but thought he was a really solid 2nd round QB.
9 Christian Ponder (2011)
I gave Ponder a 2nd round grade just like Dalton, but I still don't agree with where he was selected.
10 Brandon Weeden (2012)
Weeden will likely get a late 2nd round grade from me, and as the draft comes closer I think he will rise once the Manning/Flynn sweapstakes is over.

Read the BOLD, I'm going off how I saw them as prospects. Gabbert still has a high ceiling than Dalton IMO, but we will see if he ever gets anywhere close to it...

I'm about 99.8% sure you had Ponder over Cam...

I don't think so. I hated Newton, but I had him behind Jake Locker based on potential upside. I said many times if he kept his nose clean and fixed the accuracy issues in the short-mid range game he had star potential. You're right in saying I was a big Ponder supporter though, I really liked him as a prospect (Still thought he was overdrafted too...I had him as a late first guy). He's got a little Tony Romo in him.

Again I'm almost positive we had arguments on irc where you said Ponder was better. You had it in your head that Cam was horribly inaccurate.

How I have them as prospects. It's not fair to use the past year when looking back.
1) Andrew Luck
-Almost everything I want in a QB.
2) RGIII
-Another high character guy, he produced and check out tools wise.
3) Jake Locker
-I liked the tools and what I saw from him enough. No major character problems for me.
4) Cam Newton
-I personally just didn't like his attitude and the way he carries himself. Offense was a concern but his tools were outstanding.
5) Ryan Mallett
-Liked him all around except for the drugs. Slow footed but not a fatal flaw.
6) Ryan Tannehill
-I haven't seen a ton of him but I like his overall tools.
7) Christian Ponder
-I didn't think he was as good as he should have been in college and thought he was a 2nd rounder or maybe late 1st. #12 was a shock and then had people had to make up reasons why it made sense.
8) Blaine Gabbert
-I didn't get it with him. Great tools but just not a good football player. The phantom pressure scrambles was just to obvious. 'The natural' is an idiot.
9) Colin Kaepernick
-Raw player but he produced and won at a lower competition level. At least he had good tools and could be coached up in a few years.
10) Andy Dalton
- I thought he was limited overall but could work on the right team. I called him to the Bengals a couple weeks before the draft because of Gruden offense.
11) Brandon Weeden
-I don't hate him but his age is a limiting factor. I just don't see anything really that special when I watch him play. He was efficient in a potent offense and could help a team soon. His maturity as a person should help act like a pro sooner than many other 1st year QBs.
12) Brock Osweiler
-Nice size and moves well still. His release isn't as high as I'd like. Good set of tools to work with if you give him a couple years with a good QB coach.
I think that RG3 is a better QB overall, but I think Locker, Newton, Gabbert, and Mallett all had better tools. They all have a better arm and better size (except for Locker size wise). I like Luck and RG3 more as individuals but last years class had a ton of ability.

Don't have time to go too in-depth right now, so will try to get back to this at a later date. Ranking based on players pre-draft 2011 and pre-draft 2012 at similar points in time. This list is thus not only on physical upside, but a combination based on information that deals with off-field and vision.
1. Andrew Luck.
2. Robert Griffin III.
3. Blaine Gabbert
4. Cam Newton
5. Ryan Tannehill
Decent Gap
6. Ryan Mallett
7. Jake Locker (Always said last year that, if you give me a good QB Coach and 2-3 years to develop Locker, I'd be fine taking my chances on him)
8. Colin Kaepernick (see ... Locker basically)
9. Kirk Cousins
10. Andy Dalton
I guess you could toss in Weeden and Ponder in with Cousins and Dalton and order it any way. This shouldn't be viewed as a knock on Weeden, who I think can play in the NFL, but his age IS a factor. I never liked Ponder as much as many, but I did think he could be a starter someday (I think I compared him to a more athletic Schaub). I really like Cousins as a guy who I think might be able to pick up an offense quick and step in. I feel like Cousins offers a bit more upside than Dalton did, hence the tiny edge.
I really liked Stanzi a lot last year as a solid mid-round QB option.

It how people viewed them at the time they were/are prospects, not with how things have played out with some having a year of experience in the league

I had Gabbert a tick ahead of Newton last year (but said in the fall of 2010 that I thought Newton was a worthy 1st overall option). Since I don't see the point of comparing incoming rookies to guys that have been in the league for a year, I'm comparing them at similar points in time (otherwise, there's very little case to place Luck ahead of Newton, since Newton's proven something).

Based on the ten in the initial post:
1. Andrew Luck, Stanford*
2. Robert Griffin III, Baylor*
3. Jake Locker, Washington
4. Cam Newton, Auburn*
5. Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M
6. Blaine Gabbert, Missouri*
7. Christian Ponder, Florida St.
8. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas*
9. Andy Dalton, Texas Christian
10. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma St.
I was a little bit low on Newton because of the offense he came from and his character so I had Locker as the top QB that year. I was a little bit nervous about Ryan Mallett's rumored drug habits but without those he would probably go #3 ahead of even Locker. I had the top eight guys substantially ahead of Dalton/Weeden.
