This move feels very connected to the reasoning for not re-signing Curtis Lofton. I wonder how long this move has been in the works. It seems reasonable that Dimitroff may have been targeting Samuel for a while.

See ya. Good move for Atlanta but I'm not sure there are a lot of Philly fans that mind seeing him go. A corner like Boykin could definitely get a look in the draft but I'm not sure how they feel about Marsh at this point

I'm honestly not a huge fan of Asante, I think he's kind of an overrated player. But I'm hearing it's for a 6th rounder so I'm pissed the Rams didnt go after him.

6th round pick? I know NE doesn't have a 6th rounder... but man I can't see why we didn't do something.
I know he's not great at much besides picking the ball off, but that's pretty important. I mean Deion Sanders made a Hall of Fame career on it.

Yes that is why Deion made the HOF because of INT numbers.

Deion is in the hall of fame because he could cover anyone and if you threw his way, he was going to pick you off.

Obviously, I'm thrilled. While Asante's far from perfect, he's a great fit for what we're trying to do here. Nickle defense has been a massive issue for this team for quite some time, and this can only help.
The question now becomes, what do we do with our nickle situation? It's kind of Eagles-esque in that none of these guys are all that familiar with the position.
If it were my call, Dunta Robinson would move to the nickle. Grimes and Asante are both very good off man guys, so let them do their thing on the outside. Keeping Dunta on the inside will let him be more physical (while not having to worry as much about the deep ball) and snick his nose in the run game to compensate for Asante being an awful run defender.

I really like the move, esp for a 6th rounder. Great start to the draft week.

I've been a Falcon's fan too long to buy this Samuel for a 7th rounder stuff. When's the part that we find out the Falcons also included a 2013 2nd rounder?

Eagles reporting its just a 7th... Good trade for you falcons fans. I would've liked to get more in return, but I have a feeling the Eagles forced their hand too early and lost a lot of leverage. Teams knew he wasn't in their future plans, and only offered these types of deals. I still would have hoped for more than a 7th rounder, but its better than releasing him, which is what was bound to happen if he couldn't be traded. Now we have room to sign guys like Shady, Maclin and DRC if he performs well in his first year as a starter. Shady and Maclin are far more important to the team than Asante is, so if this enables them to get them on for long term deals, this makes sense.

I don't get it...was this purely for cap reasons for the eagles?

They are going to say that, but he also didn't fit in with the press-man they wanted to implement. Those are the two biggest factors, and I'd say they were the majority, if not almost all, of the reason he was traded, and for so little. I'd bet he has about one good season in him yet before he starts really declining, the Eagles are great at knowing when to cut ties with veterans. But even one great season of CB play and however many average seasons the Falcons get out of him is worth a 7th rounder, IMO.

That, and he was the odd man out of those DBs (Aso and DRC much better man defenders).

The Eagles want to implement more press man coverage with Nnamdi and DRC.
Had the Eagles kept Asante, DRC would've been in no man's land again this year and last year's third round pick Curtis Marsh would've been stuck warming the benches again.
LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and DRC all have expiring contracts in the next two years and they figure to demand a good amount of cash and the Asante trade takes 7 million off the books this year (about 2 million and some change in dead money) and 11 million off the books next year.
Money and scheme. Plus they had absolutely no leverage.

wow, I really woulda thought another team would have offered higher. Unless they did and Asante turned them down by refusing to restructure

Hadn't thought of that, mightytitan, that could very well be possible.
