They should just change this to the top offensive player. Nothing against Manziel, but Te'o deserved this. He was the heart and soul of the top ranked team. He won games for his team, which is difficult for a pure defensive player. Johnny Football was more exciting to watch, but I think Te'o was a bit more "outstanding." If he can't win it, no defensive player can.

The problem for Teo is that his biggest moments were routine tackles. Yes, they were in a crucial situation, but heisman moments tend to be 80 yard runs with stiff arms at the end to win a game or a huge pick six or something. Teo had 0 touchdowns.

It's the biggest reason why no OL will ever sniff the award.

I'm sorry but this is just incorrect. It's silly that Te'o finished 2nd let alone went to New York. Te'o wasn't even the best defensive player this season let alone best overall player. And it's not like Manziel just won it by default either. He was amazing this season and probably would have won more decisively if the hype train for him started earlier.

I completely disagree. The best football player in the country all year was Johnny Football.

A defensive player can win it IMO but they're going to need a bigger season statistically than Teo had.
Suppose Manti also had 15 sacks, 20-30 TFL and oh, 6-10 defensive TDs by himself this year, then I would have been more open to him winning.

His 2012 season just wasn't spectacular enough to overtake your standard Heisman QB candidate.

Lol... 15 sacks... 6-10 defensive TDs... you want Manti's 7 INTs too?

That is near impossible my friend. That's GOAT NCAA season defensive stats.

I thought if there was ever a time for a defensive player to win it it was this year. Guess not. I do think Manziel had a rightful claim to it. But Teo was the best player on the best tea, overcame deaths to people close to him and was tied for the NCAA lead in INTs. Meh.

I didn't realize that was a qualification...How many deaths did Cam overcome?
His INT's will show to be an anomaly more than skill. He has played what, since he was a freshman? 7 ints in 2012 is impressive, but for a guy who had 0 before, sorry if I doubt the skill in those picks.
2 forced fumbles. For his career.
Only 50 or so solo tackles.

Sorry but the whole being an awesome dude and all is 2nd to being the best football player.

The game is part mental. Having 2 people close to your die in one week can break you down. It's more than him just being an awesome dude.

And BTW, I wouldn't have voted him #1 (Nor would it have gone to JM either).

I think being second in the country in interceptions as a linebacker is pretty outstanding. Yeah, it would have been nice if he had a few more sacks, but that isn't their defense.

I think Clowney may have a chance next year. 15+ sacks in the SEC, some of those being strip-sacks, maybe pick a few up for TDs could do it, but even then I doubt it. QBs are just so much sexier.

I gave up expecting a defensive player to do it when Suh didn't win it. Teo never had a chance imo

I think Clowney brings it home next year if healthy. Will have as much hype as any DL we've ever seen going into next season and will back it up unless he gets hurt.

Te'o is like the 3rd best player on his own D behind Nix and probably Truitt.

Lee and Clowney were the best players this year.

There wasn't this much outrage when Suh finished 4th a few years ago, and he was way more deserving than Te'o.

If Nebraska had been undefeated that season, I think there would have been a greater push for Suh to win it.

Mark Ingram and Toby Gerhart were really outstanding in 2010, so it's hard to say Suh got shafted.

So how does Manziel translate his game to the NFL after next season. Is he RGIII or Russell Wilson.

It appears likely he could be the top pick for 2014.

Not a fan of him in the NFL. He reminds me of a Ty Detmer kind of player.

It appears likely he could be the top pick for 2014.
Manziel's season was a product of his OC. Case Keenum was in the same system. They'd probably just move JM to RB in the NFL.

It could also be a product of having a top 3 OL in college football.

At least he'll be able to run around and not get killed. That guy is small though. I'm more interested in Geno Smith.
