Default Official When Does Manti Te'o Get Drafted?

He would appear to be free-falling, after his slow 40-times at the combine, on top of the pathetic showing against the real team, Alabama in the BCS title game.

He's dropped to round 2 in almost all mocks I have seen now, and I have listened to some "experts" say he's not draftable if you base it on what he did against Bama.

One game a career doesn't make, nor does a combine 40.
But those are some big red flags.

I'll put the Over/Under at #50 for the pick he gets taken.
You got the over or under?
Over meaning WORSE than 50.
Under meaning BEFORE the 50 spot.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon...-dash/1946897/
http://www.gannett-cdn.com/media/USA... 3bc4da4bf3083

Not that combine performance is always the greatest predictor of success. Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict ran a 4.93 and 5.1 at the combine last year. Paired with his off the field issues, the former potential first round pick ended up falling all the way out of the draft and had to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Cincinnati Bengals. After all that, he ended up leading the AFC wild card team in tackles as a rookie.

That's just crazy, there's no way he drops out of the top 50. 0% chance. I'm gonna say he goes top 25.

Perhaps.

But the type of talent he faced against Bama was more indicative of what he will see in the NFL, and he was a scrub, just a turnstyle basically.

And the few times he did get in there, he whiffed on Eddie Lacy.

Mark May wouldn't touch him:

Any team that wastes a 1st round pick on Manti Teo should fire their GM on draft day

Hes a mid to late 2nd at best

Mel Kiper is right that a team like Baltimore will take Te'o late in the first. Despite everything else, the guy was still the defensive leader for one of the best football teams in college last year.

That pic is hilarious but I don't think people should look that much into it. What if an Assistant asked him "hey Coach, do you think the Chiefs can be competitive with Alex Smith at Quarterback?"

4.81 isn't even that slow. James Laurinaitis ran the exact same time.

I am going over. You have to be pretty damn special to be an ILB drafted in the first round and when you factor in his NCCG performance, his poor workouts, and the LENNAY you have a guy who I think will fall pretty far. He was projected top 10 at one point which may have been unrealistic to begin with, but I think ultimately he ends up going in the back half of round 2.

Right, the fact that he was 2nd in the Heisman voting had nothing to do with it. Or that he had 7 INTs in the year he came back to work on his pass coverage skills, or that his defense, which he was easily the best player on, was #1 in the country and also #1 in goal line stands. It was just ESPN hype.

QUite the contrary in fact. Him falling is ESPN hype over the stupid fake girlfriend hoax. You have it backwards.

In the end, he should slip due to his 40 time, but he should go between 25 and 40 IMO. He's a similar prospect to someone like Laurinaitis or Maualuga minus the character issues.

You really think he was easily the best player on ND's defense?

Unless he dressed up as Louis Nix III or Stephon Tuitt regularly, then Te'o was no better than the third best player on Notre Dame's defense.

Te'o was easily the player on the Irish defense that got the most positive media coverage, but that's hardly surprising in retrospect. Getting media praise and being good aren't necessarily correlated, since sports media thrives on creating and sustaining narratives.

Say Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

No, but seriously, it was the ESPN hype machine predicting him top 10 pick possibility. Kiper even joined in for a little bit in his segments. He had terrific year, no one is taking that away from him. At the same time there has been plenty of players that have had terrific years and were the best player on their defense but were not 1st rnd caliber NFL players. That is not a knock against him but it is the truth. I can name a bunch of linebackers over the years from college that fit the same bill as terrific college LB that doesn't translate to NFL Pro Bowler in the NFL.

Buster Davis
Paul Pozlusney
Vince Hall
etc.

Don't be naive and think the Lenay story didn't help contribute to his heisman campaign throughout the year.

You get where i am going?

He should be right around pick #50, but I think the fact that he plays one of the least important starting positions in football and is likely a 2 down player makes the teams in that range opt for somebody else.

Forget the fake girlfriend stuff...

He used some lame excuse to opt out of the bench press.

He used some lame excuse to explain his terrible 40 time.

Mental toughness does not appear to be Te'o's strong point.

In stark contrast is a blog post that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had about Kevin Minter a couple days ago

Quote:
Take for example, Minterís game against Florida last season. LSU lost, 14-6, on a very humid, very muggy day in Baton Rouge. His value to LSUís defense was obvious. When Minter exited that game with cramps, his team led, 6-0. Inside the locker room, Minter was given intravenous fluids for both legs. And when he returned, the Tigers were trailing, 7-6.

Minter played through severe exhaustion and pain to make 20 tackles ó one shy of a school record. His two sacks and one forced fumble kept LSU in the game. At the Combine, Minter has been talking to teams about this experience against Florida.

ďI was sweating profusely,Ē Minter said. ďTo be honest with you, it was so humid out there. I think it was 80-90% humidity outside. It was a struggle but itís kind of what we go through in Baton Rouge. Itís nothing different. We were just out there for a lot of plays and it caught up with me.

ďMy team was depending on me to be out there and make a lot of calls and play well, so thatís what I did.Ē
While Te'o blames his bad time in the 40 yard dash on "stress and lack of sleep" (as if other people at the combine are also not stressed and tired.) I think Te'o's excuse for his performance is honestly more worrying than his performance.

Agreed. Well-said.
Excuses are often a sign of mental weakness and of things to come.

Te'o is nothing more than a product of the Notre Dame hype machine.

The jackasses saw a "story" and ran with it to hype one of their better players and the thing spiraled out of control for the kid. He was loving it until the charade came crashing down.

Also, he should thank Denard Robinson for some of the stat padding.

Oh, and I think it's way over 50.
