Jim Thomas: It's down to the two Longs
Radio report typed and posted by playmaker on Real Rams Fans...
Quote:
Jim Thomas was just on Team 1380 with Bernie and Randy....
On the draft.....
The Rams won't say it, but it is down to the two Longs, Chris and Jake, for the #2 pick.
Haslett wants Dorsey.
Linehan and Haslett want Chris Long.
Devaney and Linehan want Jake Long.
Rams are allowed 30 draft prospects to visit Rams Park along with 5 "locals".
April 13 is the day both Long's, Dorsey, and Gholston are coming in to Rams Park.
Gholston is the "trade down plan."
Zygmunt really doesn't have much to do with the draft. More of a free agent person.
He said the Rams will have their draft board completed the Wednesday before the draft.
O-Line coach Steve Loney is already getting frustrated with Alex Barron. Thomas said if the Rams draft Jake Long, he wouldn't be shocked if Barron is traded before camp.
He also hit on the Rams Training Camp site. Said it will most likely be a town an hour outside of Madison Wisconsin, Osh Gosh, where the University of Wisconsin used to hold camp. And Macomb Illinois is the backup plan.
He hit on the jersey article he wrote about this morning but nothing new.

Thomas was saying that Linehan was raving over Jake Long at the owner's meetings. Makes me wonder if he's trying to get the Chiefs to trade up.
According to the trade value chart, we could get their 1st rounder (5th overall) and their 2nd rounder (35th overall)
Could you imagine a 1st day of......
1.Vernon Gholston (Thomas says the rams will only take him in a trade down scenerio)
2A. Antoine Cason
2B. Mario Manningham

The trade scenario is looking better and better everyday. If we can get another 2nd round pick it would be great.
What about someone like Sam Baker OT in the 2nd. I also think Manningham is starting to fall down the list with off the filed problems.

I kind of figured it would come down to the two Longs all along, so that isn't that surprising. Trading Barron would come as somewhat of a shock to me. I know opinions about him are varied, but he is average at worst IMO. With that being said, it doesn't really make sense to trade a solid OT when we are already relying on a OT that has suffered season ending injuries in two consecutive games. I wouldn't be surprised if Jake Long beat out Barron, but I would be very surprised if they traded Barron, thus subtracting the OT depth that drafting Jake would create. As for trading down and picking up another 2nd, that would be excellent.

Is it possible that Chris Long could drop to us if we traded down to 5? It doesn't seem that anyone from 2-5 needs a DE as bad as we do.

It might be possible, but I don't think they would tempt fate if Chris Long does fortunately drop to them.

Two things I think:
1. The Raiders would not pass up Chris Long if he fell to the fourth overall pick. I can't imagine them passing up Howie's son, especially when they could use the talent at defensive end.
2. As much as they covet him, the Chiefs won't trade up for Jake Long. They have so many needs and so much roster turnover, they need every pick they can get.
