Reed can play FS well, so it is a legitimate question. They are very similar players in that they are intelligent, have pretty good speed (Reed's a little faster), and can hit like trucks. I have always liked what they bring to their defenses, especially Dawkins because he is one of the best leaders in the game today. Reed would be the leader of the Baltimore D as well, but that is Lewis' job. If you watched Reed ath the U you know he is a great leader.

I give Dawkins the slight edge over Reed, but in a few years when Reed is in his prime, he will be a better player then Dawkins' in his prime.

A Dub
4 sacks
4 FF
4 Ints
85 Tackles

Reed
0 sacks
1 FF
5 Ints
60 Tackles

Dawkins
1 sack
5 FF
4 Int
98 Tackles

so its between Dawkins and A Dub for most complete Safety

Reed would have a lot more tackles if the Ravens' defense wasn't so good.

Especially when Safety stats are indicative that the front seven isn't doing to job. Obviously isn't the case in Baltimore. With Thomas, Scott, Lewis and that D-Line absorbing all the Tackle stats.

You've never heard of Kerry Rhodes? Even if he was a bad safety this would be hurting your arguement. I agree A-Dub is very good, and very underrated and a top 10 safety, but I don't think he's in discussion with these two and isn't the best all-around.

fenikz, look at the run defense rank of those teams;

Ed Reed's defense allowed only 3.3 YPC against. It's kind of hard to rack up stats, when runners aren't getting to the secondary. New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles were both bad in terms of YPC against, Arizona below average. You don't think that has something to do with Rhodes, Dawkins and Wilson's superior tackle stats?

Reed doesn't blitz, so sacks don't work so well for him, however Rhodes still had more picks and sacks than the other two.

INTS:
Reed- 27 in 5 years
Dawkins- 32 in 11

Tackles:
Reed- 276 in 5, total 328
Dawkins- 625 in 11, total 800

Pass Deflections:
Reed- 36 in 5
Dawkins- 109 in 11

Return TDs
Reed- 3
Dawkins: 2

FF:
Reed- 5
dawkins- 27

Passed on stats alone its hard to tell, hitting wise its def dawkins, presence could be split depending on the opposing QB. Defending the pass its def. Reed, athletecism and awareness Reed. Physical intimidation is Dawkins, mentally id say Reed since he can taclke but he can get interceptionos out his ass.

Its pretty even staight up stats wise and based on their careers right now id tke reed, ill make my final decision in 5 years to see what else Ed can do. his resume is similiar and will only get better

That's a good indication of what they're good at (but technically, they're both good at everything with one just being better), but it's a little misleading if you're comparing them, because Reed has been on the infinitely greater defense for his entire career, and thus was able to gamble to make big plays, or only have to worry about his own assignment. But after Reed, I think there's a significantly large gap between him and the next best Safety out there.

Reed can blitz and stop the run well, he can lay the lumber ask Koren Robinson or Roscoe Parish. He plays deep cover 2 basically every play and we have Landry coming up closer to the LOS so we have Reed back there in coverage.

exactly

i think baltimore was 2nd to last in total tackles... a testament of getting the offense off the field quicker

i may be a homer, but i dont see how it cant be ed reed........

the entire nfl watched as ed reed flew to every ball against indy......

i agree that dawkins is a more intimidating prescence, but reed is no slouch..... i acually think hes going for those monster hits more than wrappping up somtimes...... if hes a little late getting to the reciever, he will lower his shoulders and bring pain.....

Reed- slightly more athletic, a bigger playmaker at this point
Dawkins- hits harder, superior in run support and blitzing, also has a knack for knocking the ball out, veteran knowledge and the heart and soul of philly's defense.

I'd say Reed is #1 but it's very close.
