Martin Mayhew has also been named the GM.

Everyone fired on staff except Colletto is demoted to O-line coach. Gash retained. Both have ties to Brian Billick. I'm think Billick will be the next Lions coach. Just a hunch.

And yes I could see Rod in Chicago as Dline coach maybe Coordinator. Would be interesting. Him focusing on the Dline again would be a good thing for him.

Well at least there's some good news for Bears fans. I'm a big Brian Billick fan however.

So we need an assitant GM and a new assistant pro personnel guy. They fired the old one was the only other front office move made.

Lewand was here way before Millen so no suprise that he stays. He doesnt' make the football decisions so no big deal.

Mayhew has alot to prove. Obviously probably a bad move, but who knows maybe he disagreed with the majority of Millens moves and just kept his mouth shut. Unlikely, most likely a bad move but I'll at least give him a chance after the Roy trade going heavily in our favor. I'm not expecting much from this team anyway unless free agents decide to do some charity work and come to Detroit and we hit on the drafts with 5 early picks.

I actually feel a bit bad for him because he comes off as such a nice guy. Can't defend him however, he was not a good coach to say the least.

The thing about it is, yes, Rod wasn't a very good head coach. But did he have all that much to work with? Unless there's a complete roster overhaul ala Miami this year, is any other coach really going to do much better? Sure, maybe the Lions go 2-14 or 3-13, so I guess that's an improvement. But IMO, just about every single starting spot on the team could be upgraded. Going through the roster I can see something like a minimum of 15 starting positions that could be upgraded.

Rod fired, Mayhew promoted.

It's not even a wash. We coulda had Pioli or Parcells.

Wide Receiver is the only one I see where they have any value... Cliff Avril also played nicely in the closing weeks from what I remember.

The thing is, it WAS Rods fault for this defense being as awful as it is. Not because of his teaching abilities but ROD made a lot of personnel moves this year. Millen pull the triggerred. But Rod wanted Shaun Rogers gone(because of his attitude) and to replace him Chuck Darby(former Buc), Rod wanted Brian Kelly, Rod wanted Dwight Smith, Rod wanted Ryan Nece. The team is molded how Rod wanted. Small and theoretically fast, but this team isn't very fast. Dizon fits Rods mold but Rod only trusts veterans to Lenons gets the start and Dizon looks like a bust because of his size. DEs, Rod did a decent job but DeWayne White has fallen off in the second half the last 3 years(another former Buc), Avril looks good but seriously needs to bulk up, DeVries is a backup and nothing more. Bullocks can't cover. Gerald Alexander got hurt. Alama Francis could be Rod or Millen but busted. DT was a mess, Redding needs help but when he is by himself he was awful. Rod is just as much to blame in personnel for this year. Plus he put Colletto as OC and Barry as the DC not Millen.

No way we get Parcells. Why come to Detroit seriously?

Pioli maybe but there is a number of jobs opening up for him.

Mayhew has an awful track record linked to Millen, but I'll give the guy a chance. Not expecting much but we'll see who we get as head coach. Billick would be a good choice. Experienced coach, good offensive mind, can develop a QB even though Boller failed. Plus Billick could have some heavy input for Mayhew on selectons.

I'd be lukewarm on that too. Great attitude but does a lot of stupid things. He's pretty stubborn on changing stuff too. A lot of zone even if it's clearly not working. He won't adapt to your personnel. Chicago is obviously built for the Tampa 2 much better than Detroit but if you need him to adapt he won't. Especially considering how bad our defense is, it's a risky move. Rod has still never been a DC before either. Dline coach would be great for Chicago. I think him focusing on that with the talent you have on the Dline, especially Tommie Harris at UT, he would do very well.

We haven't fired our DC anyway, so it's probably a moot point. Lovie has shown incredible loyalty to his friends, and will probably go down with them.

Anyway, back to the Lions. If it's not Billick I think they should consider Ron Rivera, Leslie Frazier, or Jim Schwartz. Or, if they want to convert to a 3-4 they could go with Rex Ryan or Eric Mangini. I'm not sure that would be prudent, however, as Ernie Sims would be a waste.

Yeah, I'd take him to the Bears as D-line coach but he's got no coordinator experience correct? Went straight from d-line to head....ehh.

Our d-line could use a lot of help though and he did have his fingerprints on a few good ones in Tampa over the years.

He gave the fans a bone by firing Marinelli and simply believes the fans will rally around the team especially after they draft #1 overall. Nobody can say Mayhew will be a poor GM until he shows he is, so the fans will continue to buy tickets. He has used this method time and time again with success, after all the team only has 1 playoff appearance since he has owned the team.
If perhaps, the fans aren't fooled this time, then by not buying tickets, WCF would be forced to either sell the team or put his son in control. However he is relying on past experience and expects the fans to come back. Knowing Detroit football fans I think he is right.

It would be interesting if they switchted to a 3-4. Billick with Mike Nolan would be interesting reunited like in Baltimore.

Frazier I don't know yet. He has Allen and the Williams wall. Not too hard to fail with that beastly set up on the Dline but the secondary can get beat. Frazier is too inexperienced.

Schwartz or Spagnolo I would like. We still need defensive talent but its a start.

Rivera we could stick with the Tampa 2.

Mangini no thanks. I'd rather have Ryan or Billick/Nolan instead of Mangini if we are switching to the 3-4.

And yes I could see Rod in Chicago as Dline coach maybe Coordinator. Would be interesting. Him focusing on the Dline again would be a good thing for him.

If that's the case then that'd be a good move for the Lions. I like Brian Billick and think he'd be a good hire for the team. Billick's teams in Baltimore were always competitive. If he is hired, however, that would mean that he won't use a Tampa 2 defense and leaves a possiblity of converting it into a 3-4 or hybrid D.

Thats true. Mayhew has a hell of lot to prove to everyone. Especially with the stink of Millen on him. I'll at least give him a chance though. At least maybe he'll take some input from a quality head coach on personnel decisions unlike Millen who either didn't take the input or in Rods/Marty Morninwhegs case, not a quality head coach. I'm not expecting much, but who can after 0-16.

Billick to the Lions doesn't guarantee a switch to the 3-4. Billick always believed that you play a scheme on defense that best fits your personnel.

i don't know enough about the Lions to know what personnel theyre suited for. but Billick could very well keep a Tampa 2 there and build it up.
