49ers officially name Mike Singletary as Head Coach
http://blog.pressdemocrat.com/49ers/...rys-title.html
Quote:
It's official. Mike Singletary has signed a four-year contract to remain as 49ers head coach for 2009.
Team president Jed York made the announcement to the team shortly after the 49ers' 27-24 victory over the Redskins on Sunday. There was already euphoria in the locker room, and the players erupted with cheers after they were told that Singletary would be the coach.
|
Quote:
The Press Democrat has learned Singletary's contract is four years, $10 million. In the contract he has the right to hire and fire his assistant coaches.
|
Congratulations to Samurai Mike. Hope he's the guy to turn this franchise around.

This is great to see. I hope they continue to improve under him because it really seems like he has the players firmly under his wing.

Isn't it funny how the NFL makes race an issue in head coach hiring? The 49ers can hire Mike Singletary without interviewing anyone, but the Rams can't hire Jim Haslett (not that they'd want to now, even though he is popular with the players.)

The only question I have is why it took so long before San Fran realized Nolan was a terrible HC.

They did :( . I wasn't going to tell you guys, but, I was interviewed for the HC position of the 49ers. It didn't go too well. They didn't like it when I said I was in support of making Alex Smith and JTO situational pass rushers since they knows what the other QB is thinking. They really got mad when I said I was going to make Mark Roman add 60 pounds and change positions.

Mike Nolan was awful. He should have been fired last season. It still boggles my mind that he was kept.
However, if Nolan wasnt retained at the end of 2007, we dont land Singletary. Probably a Rooney Rule interview, but they most likely would have gone after a offensive HC. We'll have a better grasp at this time next year if not firing Nolan in 07 was a blessing in disguise.
