QFE the Ravens have played some excellent football this year.

Harbaugh wouldn't have been my choice to win it, but he's done a damn good job.

Preseason predictions may be the most important factor in determining coach of the year.
Wait a second, we were predicted to be good?

On the topic at hand though Sure there are coaches who have proven more and shown that they're at the top of the NFL, but COY is an award based on how much a coach improves his team in a given year and Mike Smith, Tony Sparano and Jim Harbaugh all did incredible jobs improving their teams in one season, sure I'd rather take Belicheck if I was starting a franchise, but what those guys accomplished with their teams was more impressive, thus Smith and Sparano got the nods over belly.

Exactly. Smith got a rookie QB and a RB who'd never carried a full load before. That makes his job slightly more impressive to me and IMO the right choice for the award.

Just gloating...and trying to correct some revisionistic history on your part. A lot of people on here and in the media thought we wouldn't even make the playoffs and were battling to stay out of the NFC East cellar this season. Then Osi went down and it became a lock that we would suck, but here we are, the NFC's top seed.

Bill Bellichick's name doesn't get thrown around nearly enough. He did arguably the best job of the bunch this year.

Id give it to Bellichick or Sparano.

the defense lost Asante Samuel, along with 5 players to IR. (i believe it was 5).

Their offense lost Brady, and the rest of their aging team got 1 year older. The oline lost a step, the defense lost several steps, and they played a qb who never started a game since high school all year.

And they went 11-5. Every other team in the league would quit on the season. Bellichick had his boys ready to play every week.

Yes, the offense still comprised of incredible talent, but that defense outside of the dline is terrible, and the oline isn't what it used to be. Considering the circumstances, I think he did an incredible job.

This Patriots team was not the same team as last year. And towards the end of the season, they were playing better ball than the Dolphins were.

i don't see how you can quantify their o-line losing a step. matt light was in his eighth season (30), logan mankins was in his 4th season (26), dan koppen was in his 6th season (29), stephen neal was in his 7th season (31), and nick kaczur was in his 4th season (29). yet you want to make it out like the entire line is 35+ and broken down??? 60% of them are under 30! come on.

and yes, they played a quarterback who hadn't played since high school. who was playing all-pro football by the end of the year. does one deserve coach of the year for doing a good job with a quarterback? it's not a stretch to suggest that sparano did a better job with pennington, who was actually in talks as a potential MVP, in spite of never having come anywhere near the award previously in his career.

every other team would've quit? with 10/11 parts of the best offense ever? with a great defense, in spite of losing an overrated corner?

does that mean shanahan is your second coach of the year? i mean, he took a team with no interior offensive line, no defense and 47 running backs on IR to 8-8 and just missed the playoffs. it almost seems more impressive.

oh come on. meriweather was fantastic for much of the season. mayo fully deserved DROTY. mike vrabel, as much as i hate him, is thoroughly underrated, in spite of getting older. the rest of their linebackers are still fabulous leaders, which probably doesn't mean much until you have to watch a team without a few of those guys to fire up a team on third and short or other key situations.

BS. the o-line was no worse than it was last year. people just blitzed more because they don't have an irrational fear of the name 'cassel'.

incredible is fair hyperbole, but whatever, opinions are opinions. i don't see how you can possibly suggest that what belichick did with an incredibly talented team was somehow more impressive than what at least two other coaches did with supremely untalented teams.

right, it was just almost exactly identical.
actually, i do believe that Shanny did an incredible job with the parts he had. the reason why he doesn't get any credit is bc of the 2nd half "collapse" if you want to call it that, and the fact that the lack of parts are nobodies fault but his own.

i must admit, after hearing your argument, ive been swayed. you are right.

One coach who deserved to be mention in the CoTY debate that never does is Tom Coughlin. Look at the job he did:

-12-4
-#1 seed in NFC
-Won perhaps the toughest division in the NFL
-Had to overcome Strahan retiring, Umenyiora getting hurt, Plaxico lost for season, Brandon Jacobs missing some time, Lost a couple of important defensive players from previous season to free agency
-Kept team hungry despite winning Super Bowl previous year

He deserved to be in the conversation.
