Default Mock Draft

Been a While:

Sign:

Starks, LT
Kemo, LG
Galloway, WR
Colon, RT
Madison, CB/ST
Fox, ILB/St
McHugh, FB/TE

Draft:

1) Alex Mack, C/G, California - 6'4 311lbs 5.12

I've been a big proponent of Eric Wood but that doesn't change the fact that Mack is a premiere center and could help us in a big way.

2) Asher Allen, CB, Georgia - 5'10 194lbs 4.48

Physical and smart CB, very high upside.

3) Dorell Scott, DE, Clemson - 6'3 312lbs 4.92

Despite the fact that he's built like a nose tackle, Scott is more than athletic enough to play the 5-tech role. He has NT potential down the line but I like him better as a DE.
"A look at the defensive tackles: Dorrell Scott, Clemson, 6-3, 312: After averaging 50 tackles and four sacks in his previous two seasons, Scott entered last season as an Outland Trophy candidate. But he was hampered in his senior year by a strained knee and was not very productive until the last few games. Still, scouts like a lot of things about him. He is a determined athlete who takes great pride in his leadership role and is an emotional type who will not make the same mistake twice. Scott is a tireless worker in the training room and in practices and takes pride in mentoring younger players."

He just sounds like a Steeler.

3c) David Bruton, FS/SS, Notre Dame - 6'2 219lbs 4.40

I'll be the first to admit I'm very disappointed with their decision to let Anthony Smith go. But I also understand it's what they had to do. I'm not really a fan of Carter because I don't think he's a guy that should be starting a few games a season, lacks athleticism and doesn't really have any upside. Bruton has CB Speed, SS Size and the ability to cover a lot of field. I like Mundy from what I've seen but I'm not going to bet the farm on him. I'd like to see a little competition and I think Bruton Fits.

4) Brandon Tate, WR/RS, North Carolina - 6'1 195lbs 4.52(?)

Tate has been a 4 year monster as a returner, but unfortunately his senior season he tore his ACL and MCL. But he was showing his WR Prowess. Tate's knee should be ready to go by even the draft and with others fighting for the KR/PR slot Tate can work his way in. Possibly even push for the #4 spot. This is the perfect guy to have Galloway Mentor.

5) Andrew Gardner, OT, Georgia Tech - 6'6 302lbs 4.98

I've liked Gardner for 2 seasons now, I was actually hoping we could nab him last year, I believe Felch was another big fan.

This is a Value pick here. Gardner is a 4 year starter at LT. He's faced the Quentin Groves, Gaines Adams, etc.... and he's constantly been one of the best shut down LT's. A gimmick offense and shoulder injury his senior season will push him down, but, he's too good to pass up here. Could challenge at RT and push Colon inside eventually and if not at Worst he could challenge Hills for backup LT which, I honestly think Gardner would win.

6) Philip Hunt, DE/OLB, Houston - 6'1 261lbs 4.68

Hunt is a guy that shows up on tape. He's physical and has a solid array of passrushing moves. With Timmons moving into the starting role in my mind, I think Hunt will challenge Davis for 3rd OLB. Hunt may be a 6th rounder but the potential to mold into a machine is there.

7T) Deon Butler, WR/RS, Penn State - 5'11 182lbs 4.31

This may be a bit late but I think Butler could realistically fall here. He's not a return specialist and operated as PSU's #3 WR. 2 WR's may be hard to swallow for fans of the team but if you figure that Ward, Holmes, Sweed, and Galloway are the top 4, that gives both Tate and Butler shots at the roster. I think Tate could be a #3 down the line and I think Butler offers what Willie Reid was supposed to.

7) Everette Pedescleaux, DE, Northern Iowa - 6'6 305lbs 4.98

Another big athletic interior guy. Everette has shown potential and competed well in his level of competition. He's a guy that could come in and be a nice developmental prospect down the line.

Whats Missing:

Fullback - Grab one in UDFA. I love Fiametta and Johnson but, there's just too much value elsewhere. Could possibly use Dorell Scott?

UDFA: (Guys I'd look at to Bring in)

David Johnson, QB, Tulsa - 6'2 219lbs 4.92
David Johnson, FB, Arkansas State - 6'2 265 4.73
Josh Vaughan, RB, Richmond - 6'0 234lbs 4.62
Fui Vakapuna, FB/RB, BYU - 5'11 252lbs
Jordan Norwood, WR, Penn State - 5'11 179lbs 4.58
Taurus Johnson, WR/RS, South Florida - 6'1 201lbs 4.49
Richard Quinn, TE, North Carolina - 6'4 264lbs 4.88
Jose Valdez, OT, Arkansas - 6'5 318lbs 5.23
Ryan Stanchek, OG/OT, West Virginia - 6'3 305lbs 5.26

Rulon Davis, DE, California - 6'5 274lbs 5.00
Jeremy Navarre, DE, Maryland - 6'3 285lbs 4.97
Marlon Favorite, NT, LSU - 6'1 310lbs 5.29
Myron Pryor, NT, Kentucky - 6'0 319lbs 5.08
Julius Williams, OLB, Connecticut - 6'2 263lbs 4.62
Spencer Adkins, ILB, Miami - 5'11 235lbs 4.54
Brice McCain, CB, Utah - 5'9 185lbs 4.33
Bradley Fletcher, CB, Iowa- 6'1 196lbs 4.47
Tyrell Herbert, FS, Toledo - 6'1 202lbs 4.50

Aaron Perez, P, UCLA
Sam Swank, K, Wake Forest

LOVE Mack-I still also think he's the pick.

Don't know too much about Allen and Scott but I'm cool with the the CB/DE combo

Love Bruton

Love Tate

Gardner sounds solid

Can never have too many pass rushers

Hoping we sign a vet WR and wouldn't need Butler but it's the 7th round...I'm fine with it. Might prefer the FB spot (like a Frank Summers?) here.

I like a 2nd DE in the 7th

Won't dissect the UDFA, but....Butler in the 7th and Norwood undrafted surprises me. Stanchek's solid. Love Navarre. Like Pryor a lot.

Good stuff.

Overall I love the mock. It deals with a lot of needs and is effective. I love Mack and Gardner. I like Allan and feel he is a very complete corner and plays the run very well.

Dorell Scott... Hmm.. Good player, good attitude, I'm just not sure where he would fit in our defense.

David Bruton may be my favorite FS prospect in this draft that isn't a corner. He's physical but still has range and could replace Tyrone Carter. If Mundy is the FS back-up next year I still wouldn't mind him at SS.

I don't think we'll need two receivers if we sign Galloway. We usually only have 4 WR active on gameday. I love Butler, and think he would be perfect in the slot for us. That would give us a lot of speed in the WR department. But I'm not sure about Tate. It seems like we would be using our 4th round pick on a returner with a bum knee. I just don't think he would be a good receiver. I would love it if you used this pick to take Fiametta.

I love Philip Hunt. He may not be there in the 6th though.

Scott would be a DE in the system.. 6'3 312lbs with sub 5.00 speed. The guy can make plays in the backfield, is a mentor and is a hard worker. He's got the frame to contribute early and who knows, he might even have the ability to play NT down the line (Similar to Aaron Smith).

My Thoughts exactly. I feel the same way about Bruton as I did Anthony Smith coming out. Bruton is ahead of Anthony in the mental department. Similar size, but Brutons Range and athleticism far blow Smiths away. He could play FS, SS and possibly even some Corner (NB?). I'd like him to backup FS or SS.

Here's my theory on that.

Joey Galloway is 37 Years old. I'm guessing he's got 2 years Max in a reserved role. Who better to help Hines mentor 3 young WR's to be the future of Steelers football? Hines by my estimation (The way he plays with disregard for his body) has probably 3-4 years max.

So you start the year with 5 WR's..

Holmes, Ward, Galloway, Sweed and the winner of the Tate/Butler battle.

The other doesn't dress. Unless they carry 6 WR's (Which they have in the past).

then Galloway hangs it up.

Holmes, Ward, Sweed, Tate, Butler.

Ward Hangs it up.

Holmes, Sweed, Tate, Butler, rookie.

Those guys are hitting their stride and prime right when it's time for the vets to put up their helmets.

Not to mention, If Butler is there in round 7, he's BPA regardless.

As for Tate, I have concerns about his knee (Which is another reason for the Butler pick) but the fact is, the kid was a monster all season, even if it takes a year to rehab him back in to shape or.. a "Redshirt" season, the guy is elite at what he does and with a year if he needs it, more than makes up what most 4th round picks become.

I love Fiametta as well but, Push come to shove, I'd rather grab Butler. I think Vakapuna and Johnson are underrated blockers and in UDFA could come in and steal a job.

This is another one, but if he goes there's still Jamaal Westerman and Julius Williams.

Butler would be a steal that late.

I thought you didn't like Mack at all?

I like Wood's versatility more but Mack is a better Center.

Though he'll be an upgrade from stapleton (Our weakest starter in my eyes)..

This allows Mack 1 year at RG (which really doesn't pull too much, but his athleticism will allow him to succeed if necessary).

In which case this allows us to let Hartwig go after next season, and focus on drafting a solid G.

That said, I would heavily consider Tyronne Green for Guard if 3c or 4 picks were taken.

Yeah I like Green a lot for our system. He's mobile and great at pulling but still sturdy at the point

I LOVE Asher Allen and Butler Picks. I don't think Butler will last till the 7th though.
