Just saw it on ESPN bottom line. WTF??!!
That leaves a big hole in our LB corp which was thin to begin with
Why did he retire now??? Why not BEFORE the draft and FA so we could plan accordingly
I love Bruschi and everything he's brought to the Pats but his timing sucks.

I'm pretty sure the Patriots were going to cut him and just gave him the option of retiring before they released him to make it seem like he went out on his own terms. I don't think he was planning on going out with the second team defense and trying to make tackles on kickoffs.

A classy guy, a tough loss for the Patriots even though he hasn't done much int he past two years. With the Patriots moving more towards the 4-3 I don't think this hurts the LB crops as much as people think. He was lucky to be on the team the last two years anyways. If I am the Patriots I worry about Adalius Thomas being healthy for once more than the loss of Bruschi. The loss of Bruschi and Vrable combined though is a big loss.

I don't recall seeing any injury so I think ROP nailed it - he may have been on the cut list. It doesn't make a ton of sense considering our collective belief that the LB core is too thin to begin with, but the reality is that Tedy has been acting his age.
Our biggest need is pass rush and Tedy is just not helpful in that area. With the pass rush ability Tully BC has shown (yet again) and Burgess proving he has something left plus a bunch of youth on the roster at LB, it's likely he was heading for release. Mid-season return due to injury will always be an option.
Thanks for a decade plus of hard work, determination, great leadership, and - most importantly - class act professionalism year in and year out. "Undersized" my ass.

He had a great career for us, his recent performance makes us forget about how special of a LB he was before the stroke. One of the rocks of our success in the last decade, thanks Tedy.

Bill sounded choked up & apparently was visually. (I listened to the stream)
Tedy was brillian in his speech, but that's pretty standard. Can't wait to see where he ends up as an analyst. I'd hope to see him stay w/NE in some capacity but the guy has everything a network could ask for in a talking head.

Some of the key career stats:
Games: 189
Tackles: 735 (448 solo) (287 assists)
Sacks: 30.5
Pass Def.: 31
INT: 12
TD's 4
Nothing that will wow you, unless you watched him play. There is no stat for heart, leadership & tenacity.

The timing seemed odd b/c it was so close to roster cut down. Which lead to some speculation that maybe he would be cut and retired in order to go out on top.
I thought this might be the case, actually. But it seemed odd since LB is not exactly a position of depth & experience. It turns out Tedy's knee injury (the one that almost landed him on IR last December) never fully recovered. He's been sore and limping around regularly and decided he was best served to call it quits.
In an interview 2 days ago on WEEI Bill said something that basically came across as "There would always be a roster spot available" for Tedy.
Frankly, I'm glad to hear/read/see all this info b/c Bruschi is probably the only player on the team not named Brady that I felt Bill should feel this way about. His dumb decision with spygate loses some of it's edge with the recent days' events making BB seem almost human. ;)
