First off he is 29 turning 30 early in the season. Second I am sure the Cards would have loved a first round pick, no one was offering that so they took the best offer they could.
Cards should not have gotten anything less the a 2nd and 4th for him, I would not have taken anything less then a 1st. If Roy Williams is worth a 1st, 3rd and 6th, I do not understand why the Cards dumped him for anything less then a 1st round pick from anybody
The fact that Dallas overpayed has nothing to do with the market for Boldin the last two years. EVERYONE thought that Dallas overpayed and no other teams are going to offer something like that. If you want to play the comparison game the Raiders traded Randy Moss for a 4th, looks like we got a steal getting a 3 and a 4. Boldin was available last year and the best offer we got was a mid 2nd. At the time he still had two years left on his contract and we still had Warner so there was more value in keeping him.
We can afford to trade him this year because:
We have developed talent to replace him (Breaston and Doucet).
It is the last year of his contract and he is not coming back.
We want to transition to a running game.
Our record without him is 5-2 (I think) over the last two years.
Why the market is down for him:
He is going to be 30 years old.
Has an injury history and the type of injuries he has are ones that often reoccur.
Any trade for him would require a new contract extension.
Dallas offered them a 1st two years ago and they said no, is he a worse player now? What do you people think?
He is two years older. His contract has gone from affordable to expensive (new extension). He has picked up a reputation for being injury prone the last two years. He has clashed with coaches and management.
Now if I was team like the Bucs/NE/KC with multiple 2nd rounders I would have definitely given one up for him. But at the end of the day the best offer we got was the 3rd and the 4th and to be honest I am pretty happy with that.
