Default The Boldin Trade

What we hear is Boldin and a 5th round pick to the Ravens for 3rd and 4th round picks. 1st off how do you trade a 28 year old all pro WR and not get a 1st round pick? Cards should not have gotten anything less the a 2nd and 4th for him, I would not have taken anything less then a 1st. If Roy Williams is worth a 1st, 3rd and 6th, I do not understand why the Cards dumped him for anything less then a 1st round pick from anybody. Dallas offered them a 1st two years ago and they said no, is he a worse player now? What do you people think?

First off he is 29 turning 30 early in the season. Second I am sure the Cards would have loved a first round pick, no one was offering that so they took the best offer they could.

The fact that Dallas overpayed has nothing to do with the market for Boldin the last two years. EVERYONE thought that Dallas overpayed and no other teams are going to offer something like that. If you want to play the comparison game the Raiders traded Randy Moss for a 4th, looks like we got a steal getting a 3 and a 4. Boldin was available last year and the best offer we got was a mid 2nd. At the time he still had two years left on his contract and we still had Warner so there was more value in keeping him.

We can afford to trade him this year because:

We have developed talent to replace him (Breaston and Doucet).
It is the last year of his contract and he is not coming back.
We want to transition to a running game.
Our record without him is 5-2 (I think) over the last two years.

Why the market is down for him:

He is going to be 30 years old.
Has an injury history and the type of injuries he has are ones that often reoccur.
Any trade for him would require a new contract extension.

Quote:

He is two years older. His contract has gone from affordable to expensive (new extension). He has picked up a reputation for being injury prone the last two years. He has clashed with coaches and management.

Now if I was team like the Bucs/NE/KC with multiple 2nd rounders I would have definitely given one up for him. But at the end of the day the best offer we got was the 3rd and the 4th and to be honest I am pretty happy with that.

I would have held out for a better offer. One was coming from somewhere. And I hate to tell you but there is no salary cap anymore! Where have you been? It doesn't matter how "expensive" he is. It's another bone head move by a team that wouldn't even be in the playoffs the last 2 years, if they didn't play in the weakest division in all of football. No Warner and no Bolden? Goodbye division title.

It's Boldin.

From where? The teams that wanted Boldin were the ones in the bidding today and we took the best offer. The Ravens even had a backup plan with Walter so they could have fallen out of the bidding.

In terms of cap, no it doesn't matter. In terms of how palatable a trade is for an owner, yes it does.

Drunk postings are the ones that make the most sense from people who don't know football.

just traded our 4th and next year's 7th for Kerry Rhodes

love this, he had a bad year but was a top tier safety in season prior to that

Definitely a good move, especially considering how little we gave up. I liked Rolle but to be honest he was inconsistent as a tackler and still adjusting to playing at safety. I think Rhodes can easily replace his production (he has less upside though).

On a different note I am all for trading 2011 picks if we can pick up some good players. With the potential lockout happening in 2011 alot of good juniors came out this year so the senior crop will be mediocre, plus it means that good juniors next year will likely stay in school and wait for 2012. So pretty much:

2010 draft - lots of talent
2011 draft - less talent
2012 draft - lots of talent again.

Saved 2 Million dollars and got a pure free safety, instead of a guy who was a corner and is trying to be a free safety. Good move, for a team that needed to make one.

4 million roster bonus and 8 million salary for the year, so 10 million just for the season. Rhodes is also signed until 2013, if we wanted to keep Rolle until then we would have to pony up the 7 to 8 million a year he got in his new contract.
