I like the move of Rainey to "Percy's Position" as well. Gives us a nice, explosive option in the slot (something we were desperately missing last year) and frees up more carries for MOOOOOOOOOOODY

Well this is a make or break year for Moody. Demps is still with track, Rainey is at the P/Y/slot postion, and Brown is not here yet.

So it should be Moody and Gillislee getting the most reps at RB. Moody is a 5th year senior (had to sit out a year after transfer from USCw)and if he doesn't earn more PT after getting half, if not more, of the reps with the 1s then I think he should transfer to a lower division school. JMO

Dee is backing up A.J. Jones at SAM, and behind Dee is Ball.

“Dee is playing a new spot so everything is new to him,” Durkin said. “Every time he sees a different situation or block, it is probably the first time he has seen it live. It's a load that he has to learn and he is doing well so far.

Dee has been running with the 2's mostly. I don't think he will start this year, being that A.J. Jones is a very experienced, speedy and playmaking RS Senior.

Remember that Dee just recently turned 21 (b.Feb 24, 1989), so he will be a little more physically developed than the other LBs in his class.

Another quote from Coach Durkin, basically praised Jelani and Jon as the kids that he has to shoo out of the film room. That says alot to me, in that we have verterans that should be doing the same. Good on the young guys but wish all of our LBs had the same work ethic/film study habits.

There's NC talent potential, but it's all very very raw and will be thrown into the fire to develop this year in hopes of making a run next year. There are undoubtedly going to be some huge growing pains, especially on the defensive side of the ball. However, nobody is going to be able to stop the offense.

your right about that offense. it could be crazy good. starting wit their oline, one of the better units in the country. they have different types of backs, and can pick/choose which one to use for certain situations. their WRs are unproven, but all of them are burners. andre debose could be special. TE is the spot that is clearly lacking, however. I think Brantley will be one of the best QBs in the country this year as well.

Don't be surprised when Gerald Christian is SEC freshman of the year at that TE spot.

I can attest to the move from Safety to OLB being tough, it is so different. Played Safety all my life and moved to SLB this year (semi-pro football) it is definately different playing up close to the LOS all the time. Different reads and they need to be quicker.

So a couple days ago I compared Deonte Thompson to Terrell Owens on this here site because of a quote that found its way onto a blog post by Jeremy Fowler, a Florida beat writer. It's just a dumb quote from a kid whose main skills lie in running very fast and waving his hand around when he's open, but it's March and I mostly write about college football.

Since then, new stuff has come to light:

Actual video of the quote paints Thompson as a generically positive young man; in the same interview he called Tebow a "legend" and in no way meant to imply that he was glad Tebow was busy getting told to shut the f--- up at the Wonderlic. (Which turns out to be 0 percent true, by the way).
Six or seven other Florida beatwriters were present and none of them chose to quote Thompson's "real quarterback" slip-up, choosing instead to focus on the spirit of his interview, not the letter.
Fowler's original blog post was considerably more aggressive; it was edited to downplay the quote after it started picking up general sports blog traction on the internets. This breaks a cardinal rule of blogging ethics: don't try to cover your tracks.
Other Florida beatwriters say the quote was a "poor, vastly overblown choice of words" and Fowler "has had it coming for a long time."
Had what coming, you probably don't ask because you've already seen it? A tightly-controlled chewing out from one Urban Meyer:

Hit up Google News for a full blast of indignation directed at Meyer. Specific examples from Bruce Feldman ("out of line"), Tony Barnhart ("the smart coach doesn't go after the reporter who quoted the kid CORRECTLY in an attempt to intimidate the rest") are among the better takes because they actually touch on whether or not Fowler did something wrong. Both, however, stop short of actually laying any blame at his feet. Barnhart places the blame exclusively on people who took the quote "out of context":

But in today's 24/7 news cycle quotes like Thompson's get picked up in the blogosphere and not everyone puts them into context.

The softened piece is still titled "Thompson sounds happy to usher in post-Tebow era" and leads with "things are going to get better here in the future." I mean, what's more accurate: "Deonte Thompson has great respect for Tim Tebow" or "Deonte Thompson thinks Tebow isn't a real quarterback"? Which impression did Fowler's piece give, especially before it was edited? How is that good reporting?

It's Fowler's job to put Thompson's quotes in context. Fowler chose to frame it in such a way that makes people think Thompson is a Terrell Owens-esque jerk, and Meyer's perfectly right to be ticked off at him. I guess it would be nice if Meyer had a sit-down talk with Fowler and gently convinced him not to be such a dillweed, but if we're talking about who's really screwed up here, the conversation does not start with Urban Meyer.

All the blather on blogs and the "24/7 news cycle" makes it more important that your original story is an accurate representation of reality; if Fowler frames his story like everyone else who was there did, there is no story. Quoting a kid "accurately" is more than being a court stenographer. When someone in the media pulls out a tiny portion of a larger quote and it blows up, as the AP's Larry Lage did a year ago when he quoted Rich Rodriguez saying "get a life" during a four-paragraph response to a question (ensuing blowup), 90 percent of the time the lack of context comes from the original story. Here's what I've heard from Spring Practice...

The staff is looking to simply put the three best linebackers we have on the field at once, and right now I hear that those are Jenkins, Jones, and Hicks. Jeremy Brown is the likely starter at CB opposite of Janoris Jenkins, and Josh Shaw is getting a lot of looks at the nickel spot. We'll also see a lot of Matt Elam in extra DB situations. When he's looked good, he's been amazing, but he's made a decent amount of mistakes at the same time.

On offense, things look as expected. Brantley is going to be a superstar, Demps and Gillislee will be the speedsters, with Moody as the bruiser. Chris Rainey has supposedly looked Percy-esque in the slot, Thompson has made big strides, and as usual, there's a lot of competition among the other guys. Hammond has looked good again, as has Stephen Alli, and Solomon Patton.

I'm glad the O fence is coming along quiet well . Some folks were worried about the depth at QB But I new that Brantley would be steeping in just nicely he just needed his shot . Thompson looking good as always is another good deal . Again our D looks solid and top 10 . Can't wait for the season . I hope I can catch a few games while I"m at Yellowstone working this summer . .

No way our d is top ten next year....there's no way we replace that much talent and experience and don't miss a beat...there will be growing pains like in 07.

agreed, but I dont think it will be quite as bad 07. At least we have 2 starting DBs coming back (3 really if you count Hill) in 07 we just had Joiner coming back. Haden and Wright were True Freshman and Wondy had virtually no experience at anything but Special Teams. Plus Joiner proved to be below average without Reggie Nelson out there with him.

i agree, the defense will be better this year than it was in '07. We have a lot of talent on the defensive side, but we need some people to really grow and develop in order to have that dominating defense again.

Things will be much, much better than '07. I honestly think Powell could be a D-Line upgrade from day one, Jaye Howard looks great, and we return other defensive tackles. Sharrif Floyd and Dominique Easley will also be impact freshman on the D-Line.

At the linebacker position, we have a typical UF rotation of baller athletes and actually return a few guys. Bostic, Jenkins, Hicks, and Jones will all be playmakers.

The only real question in the defense as a whole is the cornerback position. If Janoris plays like he did his freshman year, then we have nothing to worry about. Jeremy Brown has been looking good in practices, but that spot is still an unknown. Will Hill and Ahmad Black should do fine from the S spot, and if Hill is anything close to his potential, then it'll take a huge load off of our CB's shoulders.

I honestly just can't see us losing any games outside of Week 5 in Alabama and a potential rematch in the SECCG, but that's just me.

The reason why we saw a dip in Janoris' play last year was because they switched him from one CB position to another. This year the plan is to have him play the same position as he did his freshman year. I was reading that Moses was the front runner, either way I have faith in the coaches decision on the other starter.

Obviously I want the best player to win the job, but man it would be sweet to see Moses win the other Starting CB and do well at it.

Plus Jenkins and Jenkins as starting CBs, that would be badass. Then throw in some Jelani Jenkins at LB. Good ole Verne would **** his pants announcing that.
