A little off topic, but doesn't buying high on a career backup strike you as a really bad idea?

Maybe he gets in on stats or because other NFC QBs aren't very good but Rodgers does not look like he's playing at a pro bowl level through 7 games.

He wouldn't make my AFC or NFC ballot. Statistically not as accomplished as some of the other candidates. If he were in the NFC, then there's an outside shot he'd get in thanks to the fan vote, and an overall down-year for QBs in that conference. You also can't discount the presence of playing with a HoF talent like CJ2K, which allows him more space to operate his 'simple-read' system.

CJ needs a few more "**** yall" years before he's a HoF talent. I actually don't have that much of a problem because I think he can definitely do it, but it's too soon.

What, you don't think he's a HoF talent? He's about as sure of a thing to matching that description as anybody else with less than five years of pro ball experience, AD included.

AFC has always been absurdly hard to break into. Manning, Brady, Rivers and Roethlisberger pretty much put it on lock. I don't think a single NFC QB would get in over the top 3 AFC this year, with Brees and Rodgers both struggling.

Eh...I do, but he needs to prove it, if he's TD'd in this next game and retires we'll never know if that monster year last year wasn't just an anomally on what is otherwise just a very good career. Last year he was clearly a cut above the rest but this year he's not hitting those huge plays as regularly and he needs to show that he can adjust to team's focus and still dominate. And for that he needs to put up another insane year or a few more elite seasons to lock it up and make me completely comfortable with give him that honor.

Also, Peyton and Brady are automatics anyway as they are both Gods.

Who will the 3rd be?
Rivers and his stats, or Big Ben with his 2 rings?

Rivers will get in over Roethlisberger. He'll have the better stats, and there'll be bias against Roethlisberger for his suspension and the alleged rape controversy.

If the Steelers stay an elite team in the AFC and wrap up a high playoff seed while the Chargers continue to flounder, all the stats in the world aren't going to be enough to save Rivers. Winning and decent stats are better than losing with great stats. By that rate, Kyle Orton should be mentioned as well.

My guesses right now would be Peyton/Brady/Schaub or Flacco and Rodgers/Brees/Ryan.

Rivers needs to show me something in the postseason. I'd put Ben in over him if Ben gets Pittsburgh the 1 or 2 seed.

Rivers is this generation's Dan Fouts. Except Fouts didn't have fantasy football back then, so he wasn't getting his nob slobbed bc he puts up gaudy statistics.

Roethlisberger could lead the Steelers to the #1 AFC seed and virtual lock for the Super Bowl, and he still won't carry the fan vote. And I disagree about winning having that big of influence of Pro Bowl ballots. Obviously, there's a corelation between winning a good QB's because of how important and impactful the position is, but I don't think it's the end all, be all. We're not talking about MVP voting. If Rivers can significantly outproduced him, then I don't see Big Ben getting in over him considering his suspension and public standing with both fans and writers.

And the stats aren't going to be close. Rivers will play in 4 more games (assuming neither gets hurt), and is having an insane year. Not to mention, the Chargers always finish the season strong. If Rivers continues on his pace and the Chargers finish strong like they always do, then Rivers is the 3rd QB.

I'm not saying winning doesn't matter. But you have Rivers who's on pace to pass for 5,300 yards and around 32 TD's compared to Big Ben who's on pace to pass for 3,300 yards and around 24 TD's. I don't think having a better record is enough to overcome that, especially with Big Ben's baggage.

What were Rivers stats 2 years ago when he led the Chargers to the playoffs and led the NFL in passer rating, and still got snubbed?

Rivers is certainly no lock at all.
I'd be surprised if Shuab got it, but a win Monday Night at Indy would go a long way to impressing the nation. Big stage. I hope that game is a shootout.

4,009 yards, 65.3% completion percetage, 8.4 Y/A, 34 TD's, and 11 INT's.

I don't get what you're arguing though. What I'm saying is that I think Rivers's odds of making the Pro Bowl are better than Big Ben's, mainly because he'll put up better stats, Ben missed 1/4 of the season, and resentment toward Big Ben's alleged rape controversy.

What you're bringing up took place 2 years ago in a different NFL landscape and is in a broader circumstance than what I'm talking about. If you want to talk broadly, looking back at last year would be more accurate since it was more recent and Rivers made that Pro Bowl (over Ben Roethlisberger who's only been voted once, in 2007). He led the AFC in QB rating then too, but was 5th in yards and 4th in TD's.

Well...what we do seem to be in agreement on is that there are 4 guys with realistic AFC potential barring injuries....while the NFC is much more wide open.

Honestly, I can see Matt Cassel creeping into the discussion as his yardage gets better. Week 1 was pretty brutal for his fantasy stats, but those were horrible conditions and Weis didn't have much of an idea of what he had on offense. Bowe is stepping up and McCluster has become a part of the passing game... Should be interesting when Chambers returns.

But, yeah.... Peyton, Brady, Rivers and Brees, Rodgers, Eli at the moment.

I don't get what you're arguing though. What I'm saying is that I think Rivers's odds of making the Pro Bowl are better than Big Ben's, mainly because he'll put up better stats, Ben missed 1/4 of the season, and resentment toward Big Ben's alleged rape controversy.

Last year the Chargers got the second seed. Two years ago the team appeared finished when pro bowl voting ended.

I like that, but I have a feeling the Falcons are going to finish about 12-4 with that cupcake schedule they have. That means Matty Ice will creep into the discussion for sure.

I'll start with the NFC where there were the Big 4 entering the season:

Brees
Rodgers
Favre
Romo

http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorysta...true&Submit=Go

It's amazing to look at the passer rating leaders right now. Remember how great they were last year? Not this year. Right now, Romo is the leader at 94.9, which wasn't even top ten last year I believe. With him beind out, he's out of the Pro Bowl as well.

Currently, the 1-5 in NFC passer rating is:
  1. Romo
  2. Brees
  3. Matt Ryan
  4. Rodgers
  5. Eli Manning

Passing yards is:
  1. Brees
  2. Rodgers
  3. Eli Manning
  4. McNabb
  5. Matt Ryan

Passing TD's is:
  1. Brees
  2. Eli Manning
  3. Rodgers
  4. Romo
  5. Matt Ryan

I can't believe that Brees still ranks that high.
For the 3 Pro Bowl spots, I think it has to be between:
Brees, Rodgers, Eli & Ryan. One of them will get eliminated.

By the way, here's another indication of how much better the AFC is than the NFC:
Romo's NFC-leading passer rating of 91.4 would rank 9th in the AFC, right between Seneca Wallace and Matt Cassel.

And did you know: Ryan Fitzpatrick of Buffalo has a passer rating of 102, which is right behind Peyton Manning, 2nd in the NFL.
He has 11 TDs to 4 Ints, which is the same as Tom Brady, who's passer rating is 6 points less than Fitzpatrick. In 70 less attempts, Fitz has the same # of TD passes as Brady, which is amazing. Maybe Buffalo doesn't need to draft a QB with that #1 pick.

Vince Young's passer rating is 3rd in the NFL. Ahead of Rivers, Brady, Schuab.
Probably Brees, Rodgers, and Manning for the NFC.
