Former PSU Coach Jerry Sandusky being investigated for Pedophilia

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

But there's no shortage of stories and rumors about Penn State football sweeping problems under the rug, is there?

Why did college football let an accomplished coach like Sandusky walk away at 55? Why did he disappear into relative anonymity?

A grand jury, spurred by a complaint made by a 15-year-old boy in 2009, has been investigating Sandusky for 18 months. Witnesses include Paterno and Penn State athletic director Tim Curley. Interviewing Paterno about a subject like this had to have been one of the single most uncomfortable acts in the history of jurisprudence.

Plenty of questions remain yet unanswered. Potentially among them: What's more important, Penn State football or the welfare of a few kids?

Did you even read the article? The writer used the word if so many times it makes me wonder whether he's writing a factual article or writing a fictional story.

Maybe if you had read the article you would of realized it was a speculative piece and more akin to a blog post than a fact-checked article.

If by 'let go' you mean 'retired' than sure. Because we NEVER see coaches/players retire right in the middle of their primes...

This article is a COLUMN and is pure speculation. There are no facts behind it and it was written to provoke thoughts/discussion. If you aren't familiar with Mark Madden, he is a former WCW announcer that is VERY opinionated and VERY biased. This is the same guy that got fired from his Pittsburgh radio show because he called Deshea Townsend a jackass and then proceeded to verbally blast the organization, the Dan Rooney in particular. He's a Pittsburgh guy and has never portrayed Penn State in a good light so it was a perfect situation for him to throw a few unfounded claims out there just because he doesn't like Penn State.

When Sandusky retired, this was NEVER brought up as a possible reason. The consensus then was that Sandusky wanted to be a HC but he realized that JoePa was never going to call it quits and although he had the opportunity to coach at multiple other programs (most notably Maryland), his true desire was to coach Penn State. So he had a choice, continue coaching Penn State's defense with no promotion in sight, take a head coaching job elsewhere, or retire. His heart and soul was in center Pennsylvania so he decided to retire and move on from coaching.

Also, just to show how much research Madden did, this part is 100% false.

Never any stories about Sandusky being pursued for a high-profile job. Never any rumors about him coming out of retirement.

Oh really? Because he was offered the Virginia job in 2000 before it eventually went to Al Groh.

I'm not saying we can completely dismiss this stuff because child molestation is the lowest of the low in my book, I'm just saying we need to let the process and FACTS come out before we go ahead and just assume there is some conspiracy at work here and start tarnishing a couple legends' images just because we're bored.

Its not like there is email communication proving JoePa knew about this or anything...

Agree with not passing judgement. However, the picture looks pretty rotten, yellow journalism aside.

There are plenty of non-speculative articles out there. Here is one.

And JoePa isn't aware of what century he is in, let alone be competent enough to know how to use email :)

What kills me is when PSU fans act like he's a saint. I don't think he's a bad guy, but he's got his fair share of compromised morals. The guy has had scandal after scandal brushed under the rug since he's a demi-god in that region of PA. The weak reaction to having a gang of his players assault some fellow students really stinks.

Regardless, I'm bored, which is why I started this in the first place. The Cam Newton fest in the main board has driven me insane.

And to Don Vito, I'm an OSU fan and have no problem airing anyone's dirty laundry. I'm one of the people that thinks Tressel should be fired.

Which is funny, because the actual player offense is so weak that it's sad that he tried to cover it up.

Then, again, I think just about all of the SEC should be given the death penalty and made to start from scratch. Most of those programs have refined cheating to another level.
