Why are there two NHL threads this close to each other?

A new one was started for the new NHL year and some people chose to ignore it. It's in the Mods hands now.

I'm asking because I don't follow the NHL draft: Is there anyone that's particularly worthy of the #1 pick or is this a weak year?

It's not a great year, but it's not terrible either. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is likely going #1 to Edmonton, but after that it's all up in the air. Adam Larsson, Gabriel Landeskog, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Sean Couturier should round out the top 5 with Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Strome, and Ryan Murphy also in the mix. After about the top 10 picks or so especially it's basically a crapshoot this year. Hoping Rocco Grimaldi falls to the Sharks.

I've been praying for Adam Larsson at #2 for months now. EJ, Larsson, Liles, Elliot/Barrie, gaunce and Quincey, could the Avs finally have a defense again?

I've heard it's one of the deepest drafts in years.

Why isn't he? He does everything great. He doesn't put up a lot of points, but no one on the Bruins does (I don't even remember the last time they had a guy that put up a ton of points regularly - Adam Oates?). He's a two-way forward who is on the ice in every situation.

Never know what'll happen outside of the top, but I don't see Grimaldi being there for the Sharks. I'd love to have him as well, but the makeup of our current squad makes it unlikely.
The idea of Landeskog being wasted in Florida for a few years makes me a sad panda. But so does him on the Devils.
Which reminds me, where do we see Vokoun going?

There are a bunch of players who play excellent two-way games and still have a better offensive game than Bergeron - Datsyuk, Kesler, Giroux, Toews, Zetterberg, Eriksson, ....
Crosby, St. Louis, Iginla, Perry, Getzlaf, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Parise are some top-tier forwards or close to it and all would be taken well over Bergeron.
In addition to several more forwards, there are still plenty of defensemen and goaltenders (your team might even have the best at both position) that you would have to take over him.
Also, Marc Savard was a ppg player for 300+ games for you guys.

Yeah, I don't really either. Other than Grimaldi, I could go for Tyler Biggs, Tomas Jurco, Joe Morrow, Nathan Beaulieu, or Connor Murphy. One thing that shows how crazy and close together all these players are in this draft is that I've seen all of those players anywhere from #10 overall-round 2 in the draft. Pretty much just goes to show that there isn't much standout talent in this year's draft.

I'm pumped the Devils are in position to get a top flight defender or center.
but i'm still too scared about keeping Parise to be super pumped about anything

Kings don't have a first rounder this year, but I'm not too worried because Dean knows how to pick winners in the 2nd.
Kings are trying hard to get Doughty signed before July 1st, which will allow getting a top 6 forward via trade or FA easier.

I could definitely see the Avs throwing big money at Vokoun. A not too different roster was a playoff team two years ago and we have the makings of an actually good defense now that Elliott, Barrie and Chouinard will be playing pro-hockey, Gaunce got some reps last year, EJ played great, Liles played great and we could be adding Larsson in the draft while still having a couple of guys like Quincey who could be helpful if they got their heads out of their asses.

Tweet from TSN's Bob McKenzie says he's heard the salary cap will reach $64 million next season.
Ummm ... what!?
If true, salaries are all gonna spike enormously. Brad Richards is gonna make 10 million a year.
Consider this: The Red Wings would have 16 million to spend AFTER they sign Lidstrom for 6 million. They only need like 3 players to complete a roster.

Why even have a cap if it's gonna be 64 million?
That's about how much the top-spending teams like New York, Detroit and Toronto were spending pre-lockout.

Yeah, this could get a little ridiculous.
But I can't wait to see how Florida spends 30 mil to reach the floor.

So they forfeited an entire SEASON to institute salary reasonableness and have now basically flip-flopped?

Kinda messed up for that. The salary cap was pretty close to pre-lockout values for the 10-11 season anyways.
@ Vikes - I didn't see this thread until now.

Kucherov is a 1st round talent that could fall to 2nd or even 3rd. I'd like Pens to get him.

Cap has risen 25 million in six seasons since the lockout.
TSN put out UFA and RFA lists:
West: http://tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?id=38580
East: http://tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?id=38564
