I'd look for Mark Hudspeth to be the guy. Was an offensive assistant at Mississippi State and has turned around UL-L in one season. Was also tremendously successful at North Alabama. Up-and-comer.

The top two choices are probably Larry Fedora (Southern Miss) and Kevin Sumlin (Houston), although I'm not sure jumping to Ole Miss would be a no-brainer for them.

Here's someone that's not being mentioned but should be: Hugh Freeze. Why? Former recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach for Ole Miss from 2006-2007, former high school coach of the year and won several state titles at a high school in Memphis so he knows how to recruit the north Mississippi/Memphis area, and has turned around Arkansas St. in one year.

He's also an alum from Southern Miss so he knows the southern Mississippi area as well.

A lot of people are mentioning Hugh Freeze, both on Ole Miss boards and elsewhere. Kirby Smart, Gus Malzahn and Mike Leach are also getting a lot of pub.

I don't see either of those three going to Ole Miss. Malzahn will have plenty of higher profile opportunities, same with Kirby Smart. Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that Leach will wind up at Kentucky at the end of this year. He has ties there, they need to make a splash and someone to get the fan base excited about their football team, and UK doesn't mind bringing coaches with baggage (i.e. - John Calipari).

Ole Miss should at least interview Manny Diaz. I think he could do some nice things.

I don't know why Manny Diaz would leave a sweet gig like being Texas' DC to go be a head coach at Ole Miss. I don't expect Ole Miss to make a big splash with this hiring. They're going to have to get someone like Hudspeth, Fedora, or Freeze to come there.

Top 3 choices to replace Joe Pa are likely Urban Meyer, Greg Schiano, and Al Golden, maybe even Nick Saban. Beyond that, who knows.

Both are better situations than Ole Miss. Mississippi State is arguable but Louisville, definitely. Ole Miss hasn't had a tremendously successful head coach since David Cutcliffe and its arguably harder to recruit their now with Moo St having the success they're having along with being sandwiched between LSU to the West and Alabama and Auburn to the East.

Neither is a better situation than Ole Miss. Ole Miss is in the S-E-CEEEEEEE and is in a better recruiting base than what Louisville has. Louisville is a basketball school that occassional competed for titles in Conference USA when they were there. Whoopie.

I don't know much about Mississippi football, but the national perception is that Mississippi State is the lesser of the two schools in terms of popularity, money, and prestige (though that's like being the prettiest fat girl, I suppose).

Golden was on my short list before he got the Miami job, tough to see him leave there but who knows. The guy I really wanted was Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern) but don't think there's any way he'd come now. That's the hard part, obviously this whole situation casts a dark cloud over the whole school and program but if they clean house of every coach/administrator involved, how much carryover will it have?

Nick Saban isnt going anywhere. Alabama has got to be just about the best job in the country right now.

Nick Saban will get bored at Alabama sooner or later. He is like Larry Brown and Bill Parcells who get bored at one place and look for a new challenge.

Louisville has a bigger athletic budget than Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Yeah, it's a basketball school but their stadium capacity is comparable to both the Mississippi schools

Also, comparing records from 1996-2010, Louisville has won more games and has a higher winning percentage than both Mississippi schools. Also, Charlie Strong works with one of the best AD's in the country in Tom Jurich.

The point I made previously is that LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and even Arkansas invade Mississippi for recruits. Whoever takes over for Ole Miss will have to battle Mississippi St., which has taken over the mantle for best athletic school in Mississippi, along with the top SEC teams in the West for recruits as well.

All of that and not knowing who the A.D. will be a year after your hired. That's why Ole Miss isn't a desirable position as of now.

Yeah, because they've been in Conference USA and the Big East. Ole Miss isn't an elite spot, but it's certainly better than going to a football program that isn't even guaranteed a BCS spot in two years.
