The Tigers lost in the playoffs because all of their bats were either injured or unprotected. Delmon Young was counted on to be our cleanup and protect Cabrera. Add in the fact that they've been starving for left handed bats and I can see why they did this. 9 years will put Prince at 36 years old, which isn't too bad. The hope is that he can do his best David Ortiz impression and protect our "Manny" in Cabrera. I just wish we had some speedier middle infielders and a 3rd baseman. Like it was stated, Cabrera is not a 3rd baseman. He probably would be just as good as Delmon Young and Magglio were though in a corner outfield spot.

I cannot fathom this. The contract materialized out of nowhere. Craziness.

Boras is just amazing at his job. He really did get Prince a deal nearly on par with Pujols. WOW
That 3/4 of Miggy/Prince is going to be unreal. Best since the Manny/Ortiz combo in the early 2000's

Fielder and Cabrera had a combined 68 HR and 225 RBI last season.
Add in that they'll both hit .300 and have .415+ OBPs.

Exactly. Contracts of that length usually aren't wise investments...but as a fan you gotta be stoked about the immediate return here. Tigers now boast the best 1-2 punch on offense
Also damn, the all-star voting at 1B in the AL is going to be ridiculous. NL has very little left now. AL is loaded with Pujols, Teixiera, A-gone, Miggy Cab, Fielder, Hosmer, Konerko etc. NL has pretty much just Votto and Ryan Howard(who is hurt) and then perhaps Freddie Freeman and Goldschmidt after that?

Let's be real here, the contract length is a concern, but he's an infinitely better investment than Pujols.

Mainly because Pujols end years he'll be much older than where FIelder is at. The main concern is how long Fielder holds up. Guys of his girth don't tend to age well. Both are risks just like any deals of this length are for any player IMO. I'd expect this contract to be heavily backloaded like all the other long term deals we see now
Another thing, I wonder what they plan to do during interleague games. Who plays 1B? You have to think that they wouldn't bench one of those bats in games like that. Do they put Cabrera at 3B in those games or in the OF or something?

Cabrera can survive at 3rd. He's not completely useless, but it'll come at a cost vs certain teams. The bat will mostly make up for the defensive shortcomings. Verlander and the rest can help him out a ton with quality control, but the range of Cabrera/Peralta will leave a giant hole on that side...with Delmon Young fielding behind it.

Seriously, are Red Sox (and to a lesser extent, Rays fans) on a ledge right now? They've really fallen behind the Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Texas pack of elite right now ...

I'm getting a Mo Vaughn feeling from the contract. I wonder if he will even be able to produce in the middle 3 years of his contract.

So much for that earlier rumor/report months back that Fielder wouldn't want to play for any teams his Dad played for lol

Honestly after this off season I am not a happy camper. I don't think we are worlds behind everyone though. We might not have an Elite team but we still have a damn good team.
