Peters Tears Achillies - Do Eagles Take an OT?
just wanted to get everyone's thoughts about the Eagles at 15. Jason Peters 2012 season appears to be over. They signed King Dunlap to a 1 year deal and there are other FA out there (mcneil?) but my question is will they take an OT such as Martin at 15 now? out of pure need?
the other way they were leaning were DT but they can probably find a Mike Martin type to do that job.
anyway thoughts on this news? could really shake up the first round.

I think they have to look at LT in the draft. An achilles injury is a real serious injury and Peters might never be the same player again. He is out for this season for sure and even the next season could be an issue. I think they have to give a real hard look at picking up Martin/Adams/Glenn at 15. The need is just so great, especially against the great pass rushers in that division.

They have to look at someone in the first two, maybe three, rounds.Simply put, yes. They might be in a position to take Mike Adams but a name Im keeping my eye out for is Osemele.

Matt Light for a pick? Provided he signs an extension of course. A 2nd?

^Highly unlikely. too much money invested in the position, as well as the Eagles valuing their draft picks too much...

The Patriots will not trade Matt Light; he's widely expected to retire so I doubt he would be willing to sign a contract extension.

they kinda needed an OT anyways. Herremans is better suited as their LG, though they did just resign Evan Mathis to play that spot. I know they like Mike Adams, maybe they trade down at draft an OT or stay at 15 and take one. My money has always been on them going either OT or DT ever since they traded for Ryans.

In our blocking scheme, Herremans can really play any OL spot except center (maybe he can do that too, never seen him snap, haha). As it is right now, him and Mathis are our best pass protectors. I wouldn't be shocked to see Mathis slide outside to play opposite of Herremans. (Herremans is staying as a tackle, remains to be seen which one this season). We have lots of versatile O-linemen, so we could do a lot of different things to make something work. If Mathis would be slid outside though, (not banking on this, its just an idea), I would expect an OG to be an early pick. As it is, its looking very likely the Eagles draft an O-linemen early this year...

Would he sign a one year contract though? I think he has a t least some leverage to request a multi-year deal. He has been a starting LT, who doesn't suck, for a few years now.

And here's the thing that sucks, before this injury, the entire Eagles OL was under contract until 2013... That couldn't just stay like that? NOPE, **** like this just has to happen...

Taking a LT at 15 seems a little drastic. It's only a one year thing, and both of their guards could feasibly kick to RT. I'd say, if anyone, they might take Cordy Glenn and figure out which player plays RT opposite Herremans. When Peters comes back you pencil him in at LT and either kick Glenn inside or keep him at RT.

It's a tough call. Vick because of his escapability, has not always required a top OL. The Eagles may well decide that a LT isn't a top priority and look for one later in the draft.

Actually, maybe just take Glenn and stick him at LT for now. Forgot who the QB was.

For the Eagles to draft an OL high would pretty much be saying they either don't believe in Danny Watkins or don't believe Peters will ever make it back to full strength. I'm not saying it won't happen, but someone like Glenn (who I would think would be their top target) would essentially be replacing either Watkins or Peters long-term, and they'd have to make that decision between today and the draft.
I like McNeill, but I have no idea about his health either. Just heard Schefter say they've "had talks" about him, at least.

Yes, now Andy Reid has an excuse to draft an offensive lineman, which he absolutely loves to do.

why wouldn't a rookie OT be replacing Mathis long term??? Is he that good?

I don't think Philly will use a premium pick on a guy who may only be a one-year starter.
Best bet is to sign a stop-gap like Demetrius Bell or Marcus McNeill.

We just re-signed him for 5 years and he may have taken a little bit less to stay here instead of signing with Baltimore. He had a great year last year and as of now is our 2nd most valuable starting OL after only Herremans, 3rd when Peters is healthy but that was an elite trio last season once the entire unit worked things out.
