Mike Adams Fails the Idiot Test
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/09000...p-in-nfl-draft
Quote:
|
Ohio State tackle Mike Adams tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, according to league sources, but has been upfront with teams since learning of the result and might not slip that much because of it.
|
I'm not sure that the "won't slip" part is accurate, I mean marijuana isn't really a huge deal but "failing a drug test" is; and how hard is it, honestly, to pass a drug test when you know exactly when it's coming?
Justin Houston was a first round prospect least year until a positive test (or so the story goes), and ended up in the third round. OTs are scarcer than pass rushers, but I could see him falling out of the first still.

What do the Janoris Jenkins doubters have to say about this? Jenkins didnt fail a single test since Florida and this guy fails the one at his biggest job interview of his life.

These "off the field issues" make me laugh. He's a college athlete with the world in his hands about to be making millions and he smoked pot.... big ass deal.
Someone is going to get a steal in the second round if this actually makes him slide and he isn't asked to start right away. If he can sit for a year he should be pretty damn good.
If I need a tackle and didn't get one in the 1st round and he's on the board in the 2nd round i'd be ecstatic. There are questions about his training/work ethic... so just put clauses in his contract that he needs to attend every work out or he gets fined or something. Simple solution.

This would explain why he's been slipping more than the bench reps.
I've been arguing for awhile now that the man won't fall as far as we think after the combine but if this is true it would explain it.
Sorry to hear

I agree that it showed nothing more than an immature lapse of judgment. I wouldnt move him down on my board although teams have and will continue to do so in the future.

If he was a top 10 pick, no big deal. But cause he is not, he'll slip. He already has the lack of work ethic issues, add this to the pot, he'll fall.

I don't think he was a first round lock before this, so it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him go in the early 2nd round. People wanted to ignore his combine, but a big part of his stock climbing as high as it did was the perception that he was an excellent athlete. It turns out he's not. I think Adams can definitely be a good player, but I don't think he's good enough to overcome two suspensions in college, a very poor combine showing, and a failed drug test at the combine and still go in the 1st round.

At the end of the day it may cost him a few bucks but not much. If you had him ranked right there with a Jonathon Martin (who appears to have a brain) then Martin becomes your guy.
Is it that hard to get a test kit through the mail and make sure it doesnt come back to bite you in the ass.

I still have a really hard time seeing him outside of the first round, honestly. Reiff's stock has been consistently falling for some time (We've heard many rumblings suggesting NFL front office folk view him as a G, not a LT), and there are only certain teams that will view Cordy Glenn as a LT. Unless NFL evaluators have Jonathon Martin ranked much higher then the draftnik community, Mike Adams becomes the #2/#3 OT almost by default even with this indiscretion. I have a really hard time seeing Adams outside Round 1, but even if he does slip it wont be far. Guy is a natural LT with the size, athleticism and pedigree to go along with it.

I'd take him in the first round and find a good locker room mentor for him. Somebody who could teach him how to cheat on drug tests.

Beat me to it.
Adams has serious potential. Just put clauses in his contract so he has to attend workouts and don't expect much from him in year one and you should have an above average tackle at worst.

I guess that means whoever drafts Mike also needs Janoris Jenkins apparently.

I think the point needs to be reiterated. It is not a big deal that Mike Adams smoked marijuana at some point. Probably half (if not more) of the guys in the draft have done that at least once. What is a big deal is "Mike Adams failed a drug test" and moreover "Mike Adams failed a drug test when he knew exactly when he was going to be tested."
NFL teams don't really care that much if you smoke pot, as long as you don't a) get arrested or b) fail a drug test. When you fail a drug test, you get suspended, and when you get suspended, you can't play, and when you can't play, you're no use to your team. So the worry is if Adams (and whoever else failed the test at the combine, he's probably not the only one) can't pass a drug test when he knows the date and approximate time months in advance, how well is he going to do at passing recurring random drug tests (particularly since this test means he's already in the program and will get tested more often.)
That's the reason guys stocks drop when they fail the test at the combine, not from any sort of fear of marijuana. Mike Adams is neither the first, nor the last, college athlete to partake in some illegal substances or some substances illegally. You just don't want to see guys you draft failing drug tests.

BINGO! For some reason every time someone fails a drug test, people say "it's just weed." It's not about the weed though, it's about failing the test. A guy who smokes weed every single day and never fails a test is way more valuable to a NFL team than a guy who smokes weed three or four times in his life and is busted every time.
