Brian Dawkins retires

One of my favorite NFL players. Loved him as an Eagle.

Him leaving for Denver was probably the happiest I've ever felt about a rival team's player leaving the division.

Hopefully the Eagles show some class and get this guy back in for a one day contract so he can *officially* retire an Eagle...

Kinda sucks, because I already felt like I said my goodbye when he left two years ago. He is the only Eagles during my lifetime that I would homerishly vote into the HOF whether you think he deserved it or not. (Even if I wasn't being a homer, I'd say he should get in... in time)

I'm kind of shocked. I shouldn't be surprised because he's old enough to be SuperPacker's daddy; but he's one of those guys that I just expected to play forever.

I'm glad he's retiring now before making too much harm to his body. Hopefully that neck injury doesn't have a long term effect on him.

It's sad that he retired without a ring, one of those guys that doesn't matter if they're on your team or not you want them to win a championship.

According to CSNPhilly.com Eagles beat writer Reuben Frank, Dawkins has told the Eagles he’ll retire with the team at a game to be announced this year. Frank adds that Dawkins may be in town this week to talk about it.

Dawkins would get my support for the HOF. He’ll wait a while but should get in eventually as I believe the safety position will finally start to get the recognition it deserves in Canton. I’d rank him next in line after Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu and ahead of John Lynch and Darren Sharper. I think there’s room for 3 safeties from the same era, but there will be perhaps be a cutoff point after that,

Dawkins will be on the ballot in 2017 where he will almost certainly find himself in competition with Lynch, Steve Atwater and LeRoy Butler. Eventually the latter two will likely fall off the modern era list into the Seniors pool in the middle of the next decade. Reed is 34 and perhaps has no more than 2 seasons left. He’s pretty much a slam dunk choice imo around 2020. Polamalu just turned 31 so if we give him 5 more seasons he should be on the ballot by approx 2022/23 and should get elected soon after. By 2025 I think we might regard Dawkins as the best remaining safety, and maybe even defensive back (Polamalu, Reed, C.Woodson elected and Revis not yet eligible), on the modern era list.

Yup, Dawkins was a beast. Got to see him quite a bit in the NFC East; he was a true football player and one of the best of his time. HOFer.
