No surprise. With all the crap going on in New Orleans, they had to sign Brees. I may be wrong, but does this make Bree the first $20 million a year player?

He deserves it. It's also not like it stopped them from bringing back Colston.

It's a ton of money, but it's money well spent. Mario Williams got 6 years-100 mil, and I don't think anyone would argue that Williams is worth more than Brees.

Not at this point in their contracts but by the end Williams will be worth considerably more than Brees IMO.

Well what were they going to do, not go into the season with Brees? New Orleans was just wasting time with all the stalling they were doing trying to act like the big boss corporation that doesn't bow down to anyone. If it was a running back things would be different, but not your franchise QB.

That's irrelevant in the NFL, where the last few years on a contract are just for decoration anyway.

I was never worried that a deal would not be made. Now on to winning the NFC South.

He gets $40 million his first year? How does that fit under the cap?

You can prorate your salary cap hits in all sorts of manipulative ways. This is going to tie their hands in terms of making big moves going forward, however.

Ok so basically in the future they're going to get screwed then unless the cap goes up by a ton like it's supposed to in a few years?
Cap hit for a year should 100% always be yearly salary+(bonus/# of years in contract). Kind of annoying how teams can change that.

Right, but the difference is having a deal already in place way before the season was even over, instead of dragging it out until the last minute. New Orleans didn't have any leverage here, so they were just wasting time.

I just don't understand how you can manipulate the cap by $30 million dollars.

Everyone gets their signing bonus upfront. You would have to be able to prorate it or people would be getting cut constantly.

I know you get the signing bonus upfront but cap hit equals salary for the year plus the total bonus divided by number of years in contract. The bonus alone should be a $12 million per year cap hit not even including the yearly salary. His cap hit is lower than that so I just don't know how the gurus hide all that money. In this case it's especially because it's $30 million missing.

It's a $40 million signing bonus spread over 5 years, right? So it should be prorated at $8M a year, subtracting from 40 immediately, i think.
