Gerhart is much more durable. That's a given. But it would be like having two Mike Tolberts on one team, which isn't a bad thing. Mathews, however, is the homerun threat on the team when he's healthy. He's deceptively fast like LT was. But what makes him so "outstanding" as you put it was his balance and agility.
