These replacement refs are a gong show
For real, they are awful. I am sorry if someone has posted a thread about this already but I can't believe the NFL is seriously considering playing regular season games with these clowns. There is going to be a horrible controversy and only then will the owners pony up to pay the real refs.
I'm watching the Redskins game and the refs went to review a play, came back to midfield, and then said "We're gonna look at it again".
dot dot dot....

Same people charging fans full price for tonight's preseason games are the ones trying to squeeze more money out of the refs.

It is quite sad that this is happening. Games are at stake here, and even more importantly the safety of the players I'd like to believe. Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

It seems like these refs don't know the rules correctly which scares me.

As bad as the regular refs were they were no where near as bad as the replacement refs.

Well the normal officials aren't going to be correct all the time. I think their job in this era has been made a lot more difficult with the "rule on the side of caution" mantra. Regardless, they're highly experienced and are of the highest professional grade. These replacement officials are essentially learning all of the nuances of this game on the fly. If you're a coach or a player, or a fan like us, you'd still want the best officials that are possible.

Eh, everyone is overreacting. Here is what I was saying about them in another thread:

Like I've said before, if you were watching one of the games and weren't told that the officials were replacements, would you really be able to tell a difference? Even the regular officials make flat out stupid mistakes. Everyone has just been playing closer attention now that they know the officials are replacements.

And I'm not talking like, the Calvin Johnson rule either. I'm talking actual mistakes, not just enforcing dumb rules. For instance, the non-fumble fumble from the Packers/Giants playoff game was one of the most greivous I've ever seen. It even held up after review iirc. A lot of people bitched (it would have been a bigger deal if the Giants didn't go on to win) but the league off stood by the calls saying that he was down by contact because the outside part of his foot was on the ground when he lost control of the ball.
Holy dear christ, if that means a player is down by contact, every agile RB would be down by contact as soon as a defender graced him with their fingertips.
But that might just be Bill Leavy. Only the top officials are supposed to be selected for post season games and that guy has been the ref for the two worst officiated games I've ever witnessed.
|
tl:dr - The replacement refs aren't that much worse than the regular ones, people are just paying much closer attention to them knowing that they're replacements.

They don't know the rules though BB. Yes both sets of refs will get calls wrong since the games moves so fast but these refs are making mistakes based on the rule book.

Well, clearly the NFL doesn't give a ****. Instead of us bitching about judgement calls like we normally do, we're just going to be bitching about a different kind of officiating error.

Well, the only real means we have to protest is to stop watching the games and buying their ****.
And we know that isn't going to happen.

i would rather have the normal refs who usually only screwed up on reviews occasionally then referees that don't know that there is a 10 second run off for an offensive penalty, that can't think out what they are going to say or even ask the coach if they are accepting or declining the penalty. They should know the process of the game and the rules right?

Correct on that. I just hope more games than usual aren't decided by ref mistake.

And the refs just got the rules wrong again. They threw a flag for too many men in the huddle but gave NE a TO anyway and said no penalty.

Haha I knew you would say that. They called that right, he did give himself up. He went down on his own. You may not like the rule but it was the right call. Same for the Tuck Rule.

he never was touched and simply placed the ball on the ground after a catch
it's either an incompletion or a fumble, no way is it a completion and then giving himself up

That's not the rule. You don't have to be touched if you go down on your own giving yourself up.
Anyway I was wrong about the TO thing. It's a new rule so I give the refs credit for getting that right.

They're making the games longer as well.

The Pats Giants had a pretty good one where they consulted with both coaches and then themselves like three separate times, and addressed the crowd twice as well. Everyone on the sidelines were just laughing their asses off.

You're obviously wrong because your team lost. We went over that a million times after it happened posting the rule and it was clear that they called it right. The rule might be crap and should possibly be changed but they called it to the letter. Fans of teams who had no bias agreed.
