Game of Thrones naturally has a lot more characters and different story arcs to cover than MM/BB based on the source material. All of the different story lines serve a purpose though and I wouldn't say they're "just there."

It's just not as strong as those two, if partially due to the grand scope it's aiming for based on the novels. Still the third best show on TV, but bah. A hell of a lot better than Newsroom.
