Up until this week I haven't cared about the refs. But with these refs getting pushed around, not just by the coaches and players but by the fans, they have to go and the NFL needs to get their real officials back. I don't care that they are only marginally better, they at least know the rules, will keep the game moving smoothly and won't buckle under pressure. You can see the refs in the NE/Baltimore game got caught up in the fans in Baltimore with the "********" chant and are making reactionary calls based on coach/player/crowd reactions. This happened in almost every game I watched, usually to a lesser extent, but it was showing prominently on Sunday Night Football. Get the real refs back Goodell, you ************* dickhole.

Didn't they say that the refs and the league were only $3.3 million apart? I think I saw that on espn.com or cnnsi today...$3.3 million...

found it
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...mqb/index.html

Quote:
Many of you wonder why the league can't solve this puzzle after getting the jillion-dollar CBA and TV deals done last year. A couple of reasons. Many of you think for 120 part-time officials to get an average of $38,250 per year in pension contributions is excessive. But the regular officials are simply trying to keep a benefit they've had for the last several years. The league contributed $5.3 million to officials' pensions last year and propose to contribute $2 million this year; the cut, the league says, is in keeping with pension plans around the country going to a 401k pension plan, subject to the whims of the stock market, rather than guaranteeing retirees a fixed return on their investments. What's $3 million to the NFL? That's only partially the point. The league has made many full-time employees take the lesser pension, so how can they give part-timers a better deal?

And the league wants a plug-and-play farm system of three officiating crews to be developed, so that if, say, a back judge is struggling or has to retire, the league will have an immediate replacement. The officials are balking at the reduction in job security.

I think you make a good point. I've been less concerned about them failing on what is and what isn't pass interferance etc. and just disgusted at the whole flow of the game. Players and coaches share some of the blame because they just pile on these guys, basically cause of the situation, but it's terribly damaging to the total product in my view.

So I read that Jim Harbaugh gets unlimited timeouts and challenges apparently? Plus the fact that there have been quite a few times these clowns have placed the ball about 15 yards off where it should have been.

I agree with whats been said though. Its not so much the calls its just that these refs are so easily influenced and if you beg or the coaches/crowd whine they crack and give in
. Plus they are terrible at keeping the game going. There were numerous incidents where a running was about as down as you could be before fumbling yet the would let the other team grab the ball and play.. then we have to sit through a challenge which takes longer then normal. I understand if its close but the cases I saw the runners entire body was on the ground for about 3 seconds before he fumbled. It wasn't just like an arm or anything.

Totally agree with this post. The two biggest problems with the refs are that they are awful at keeping the pace of the game going and that they are now being influenced by players and coaches alike.

I guarantee almost every coach is pounding it in their players' heads to try to influence the officials on every play. You can just see it. It's becoming a huge, huge problem for the NFL. Wouldn't surprise me to see this standoff end before this week's games.

Unfortunately, the ride may be over after that gong show moment. I'm sad. I <3 the replacement refs.

i wouldn't go that far. playing games with crappy refs is still better than destroying your sport.

that said. that was the single worst reffed game i've ever seen. at any level. i don't understand how these refs can suddenly not have any idea what pass interference actually is, ignoring anything about the final call.

Twitter tells me that the same ref that called the PI in the Sid Rice play is the one that made the TD call. I smell a conspiracy/betting scandal.

PLEAZZZ, PLEEZZZZ don't get rid of the replacement refs now!!
They're a traveling rock show, the NFL's version of Harlem Globetrotters.

The most epic NFL season ever!!!lol

Nothing better than seeing a losing player bite his tongue about how bad the refs blew the game.

Even some of the guys on NFLN are calling it an obviously blown PI call and INT.

First of all, if you're going to write out all the zeros you don't put the "k" after as well, otherwise you're saying they want $200,000,000.

Secondly, I do not give a **** what you pay them, just get them back. If the refs aren't getting that money the billionaire owners are pocketing it.

maybe they should be paid more than that considering the NFL's alternative is to hedge the fate of their multi-billion dollar enterprise on the island of misfit toys.

Why is the NFL being cheap? Don't they want a better product? I want full time officials.

my bad on the k, but in a nutshell here's the problem:

1. Retirement Benefits and Pensions

- This is the number one biggest issue. The NFL wants to give all the referees a fixed retirement package for when they retire. The referees want it to be a percentage of the profits since they see the NFL as growing.

2. Salary

They make 150k right now, as i said before they want 200k.

3. NFL wants more officials

3 more crews than normal. The other refs don't want that because then they get paid less and they could get replaced if they suck.

4. full time vs. part time

the nfl wants 7 members to become full time employees. to train recruits, scout, and do other things referees do, but year round. The ref union doesn't want that because it forces some of them to have to quit their other full time (weekday) jobs and lose the income and benefits they get from that.

So the NFL isn't the complete monster here. The refs are being as unreasonable as the NFL.

Also, it's easy to say just pay the refs since the NFL makes so much godddamn money but then you don't really understand business. What union ever gets exactly what they ask for?

I do understand the NFL's side, but as a fan I don't care.

But taking a look from the NFL's perspective even, is it really worth it. It's still such a small percentage of the revenue to give up. All this backlash from the media, fans, players, and coaches isn't worth the couple million they'd lose by caving to the refs.
